Remembering Sean Johnson: Navy SEAL Veteran and Pilot Lost in Hudson River Helicopter Crash

On April 10, 2025, a sightseeing helicopter tragically crashed into the Hudson River near Jersey City, claiming the lives of all six individuals on board. Among the victims was 36-year-old pilot Sean Johnson, a former U.S. Navy SEAL who had recently embarked on a civilian aviation career.

The Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV helicopter, operated by New York Helicopter, departed from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at 2:59 p.m. on its sixth flight of the day. Approximately 18 minutes into the flight, Johnson radioed that he was returning to the helipad to refuel. Shortly thereafter, the helicopter experienced a catastrophic in-flight breakup, with witnesses reporting the main rotor detaching mid-air. The aircraft crashed upside-down into the Hudson River near Newport, Jersey City.  

Investigation and Industry Scrutiny

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash, focusing on potential mechanical failures or maintenance issues. The helicopter’s operator, New York Helicopter, has faced previous incidents and legal challenges, including a 2015 tail rotor driveshaft failure attributed to the reuse of a faulty part.  The recent tragedy has intensified scrutiny of the sightseeing helicopter industry, with calls for stricter regulations or bans on such flights over densely populated areas.

Sean Johnson’s legacy as a dedicated serviceman and aspiring pilot is remembered by those who knew him. His wife, Kathryn, described his lifelong dream of flying and shared that they had spoken just a day before the accident.
