 MIT’s “Circulatronics”: injectable brain chips that treat — not “cause” — disease without skull surgery

MIT researchers this month published a paper describing a radical new approach to brain stimulation: billions-of-times-smaller-than-a-grain-of-rice electronic devices that can be injected into the bloodstream, ride to inflamed or diseased brain tissue, and self-implant to deliver targeted electrical therapy — all without opening the skull. The platform, which the team calls Circulatronics, is being hailed as a potential game-changer for conditions currently treated with invasive deep-brain implants, but it’s still early-stage and was demonstrated so far in animals.  

What is Circulatronics

At the heart of the system are sub-cellular-sized wireless electronic devices (SWEDs) — microscopic chips built from organic semiconductor layers that harvest energy wirelessly (the team used a photovoltaic approach) and convert that power into tiny electrical pulses. To avoid being cleared by the immune system and to steer them to the right place, the chips are paired with living immune cells to form cell–electronics hybrids. Those hybrids circulate, detect areas of inflammation in the brain’s vasculature, and then lodge themselves at the target site where they can stimulate nearby neurons. The researchers describe the approach and experiments in Nature Biotechnology.  

Why this matters

Electrical stimulation of specific brain regions is an effective treatment for a number of disorders — Parkinson’s disease, certain forms of epilepsy, treatment-resistant depression and chronic pain are examples — but today’s methods usually require neurosurgery to implant electrodes. Surgery adds cost, risk of infection, and limits who can access these therapies. Circulatronics promises a surgery-free route to focal neuromodulation by replacing a skull operation with a simple intravenous injection. If translated to humans, that could dramatically broaden access to targeted brain therapies.  

What the team has actually shown

The work is not hypothetical — the paper reports experiments in rodents showing that the SWED + immune-cell hybrids can home to inflamed brain regions, self-implant, be powered externally, and deliver neuromodulatory stimulation that reduces markers of neuroinflammation in the animal models used by the team. That’s an important proof-of-principle, but it is preclinical: safe, effective human use is not yet demonstrated. The authors emphasize many technical, safety and regulatory hurdles remain before people could receive such devices.  

Potential applications — and limits

The MIT team lists a wide range of neurological conditions that might benefit from focal stimulation of inflamed or dysfunctional brain tissue: Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, ischemic stroke, certain tumors, neuropathic pain and more. Yet several critical questions must be answered before clinical rollout is realistic:

• Targeting & control: Can the devices be reliably guided to the correct brain region in humans and stay there without migrating?

• Safety & immune response: Do the cell–electronics hybrids provoke unintended immune reactions, clots, or off-target effects?

• Power & lifetime: How will the devices be powered safely and for how long — hours, months, years?

• Removal & reversibility: If something goes wrong, can the devices be removed or safely neutralized?

• Long-term biocompatibility: Are there chronic effects of having many tiny electronics lodged in brain tissue?

Researchers and regulators will require extensive additional animal studies, large-animal testing and tightly controlled early human trials before the technology could be cleared for medical use. 

Ethical, regulatory and societal concerns

A technology that enables autonomous, invisible implants raises familiar but acute ethical concerns: informed consent, surveillance or misuse, equity of access, and governance around modifications to cognition or mood. The MIT paper and coverage around it note those issues; ethicists will be closely watching the field as it progresses. Transparent clinical trial design, independent oversight and public engagement will be essential if Circulatronics moves toward human use.

Tragedy in South Wales: Baby Killed in XL Bully Attack

Rogiet, Monmouthshire — A nine-month-old baby boy has died following a fatal attack by an XL Bully dog at a home in Rogiet, South Wales. The incident has shocked the local community and reignited debate over dangerous dog legislation.

On 2 November, emergency services were called to a house on Crossway in Rogiet after reports of a dog attack. Paramedics conveyed the infant to Grange University Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.  

Gwent Police confirmed that the dog responsible was a six-year-old male XL Bully, which had been registered with DEFRA and held a “certificate of exemption” issued in 2024.   The dog was seized by authorities and euthanised.  

Two adults, a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s, both from Rogiet, were arrested on suspicion of being “in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death” as well as “child neglect.” They have since been released on bail while investigations continue. 

An inquest into the baby’s death was opened on 17 November at Gwent Coroner’s Court. The provisional cause of death was recorded as a compressive head injury consistent with a dog bite.  The inquest has been adjourned until August 2026.  

Context: XL Bully Legislation

XL Bullies are now subject to strict controls under the Dangerous Dogs Act. Since the new rules came into force, owners of existing XL Bully dogs must:

• Register them

• Neuter them

• Microchip them

• Keep them muzzled and on a lead in public

Ongoing Support in Jamaica: A Multi-Front Commitmen

Jamaica today stands at a critical juncture. While the island nation has made impressive macroeconomic gains over the past decade, it remains highly exposed to climate shocks, natural disasters, and structural development challenges. In response, both domestic institutions and international partners are intensifying their support — not just for immediate relief, but for long-term resilience and sustainable growth.

1. Strengthening Economic Resilience

One of the most significant recent moves is from the World Bank, which approved a US$192 million development financing package to bolster Jamaica’s private sector and disaster preparedness.  The project pivots around two pillars:

• Private‐sector growth: Reforms aiming to streamline trade, modernize customs, adopt digital technology, and improve financial stability.  

• Disaster resilience: Establishing a National Natural Disaster Reserve Fund to ensure Jamaica can rapidly access funds after a catastrophe; updating building codes; and incentivizing households to install solar panels.  

In parallel, the World Bank has laid out a new country-partnership strategy (2024–2027) that promotes green, inclusive, and resilient development, supporting debt reduction, human capital, and job creation.  

2. Fiscal and Climate Support via IMF and EU

Jamaica’s collaboration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been deepened through its Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).  Under this framework, Jamaica is working with partners like the Inter-American Development Bank, Green Climate Fund, and European Investment Bank to direct climate finance to infrastructure, water resilience, and flood protection.  

Team Europe (including the EU) is also making concrete commitments. The European Union has reaffirmed its support, especially in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, pledging emergency funding, relief supplies, and technical aid.  Earlier, the EU committed €30 million toward digital transformation, climate resilience, and citizen security for Jamaica in the 2021–2027 funding cycle.  

3. Social Protection & Shock Absorption

Recognizing the importance of social safety nets, the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) and the World Bank signed a $20 million loan agreement in mid-2024 for the SPIRO (Social Protection for Increased Resilience and Opportunities) Project.  This initiative aims to:

• Establish a national unemployment insurance (UI) scheme

• Expand employment services to reach more vulnerable job seekers

• Strengthen social protection systems with better data and partnerships  

On a more grassroots level, Jamaica’s Social Intervention Programme (SIP) is actively expanding. The World Bank Group has made clear its readiness to finance rapid-response needs, including emergency funds, technical advice, and reallocation of existing project resources.  On the EU side, more emergency funding (including €2 million already pledged plus an additional €1.25 million for the Red Cross) is being channelled to help affected communities rebuild.  The UK government has also deployed £5 million in emergency humanitarian support, including shelter kits and solar lanterns.

According to recent analysis, Jamaica secured J$4.5 billion in bilateral aid during 2023, reflecting ongoing diplomatic engagement and leveraging of relationships with international partners.  Additionally, Jamaica continues to tap its diaspora for development — not just remittances, but also investment, knowledge transfer, and sourcing for social initiatives.

7. Challenges & the Road Ahead

Despite these strong support mechanisms, Jamaica still faces formidable obstacles:

• Natural hazard risk: Hurricanes, floods, and climate change remain existential threats.

• Informal economy: Many workers fall outside formal social protection nets, making them vulnerable to shocks.

• Sustainable debt management: While debt has fallen over the last decade, continued vigilance is required, especially when scaling up climate and infrastructure investments.

• Implementational capacity: Delivering complex reforms (e.g., digital trade, disaster funds, UI system) will require robust governance, clear accountability, and strong institutions.

However, with the combined efforts of domestic and international actors, Jamaica appears to be charting a path that balances immediate recovery with long-term resilience — not just bouncing back, but building forward.
