The Global Impact of Nitrous Oxide Abuse and the Evolving Legal Landscape

Nitrous oxide — often referred to as “laughing gas” or “nos” — was once primarily associated with dental surgeries and whipped cream canisters. Today, it has become one of the most commonly abused recreational drugs among young people worldwide, raising alarms in the medical community and prompting legal crackdowns in multiple countries.

A Growing Global Concern

Nitrous oxide use has surged across Europe, North America, and parts of Asia in recent years. Easily accessible, inexpensive, and falsely perceived as a harmless high, the gas offers users a short-lived euphoria, dissociation, and mild hallucinations. It’s often inhaled from balloons filled with gas released from small metal canisters, known as “whippits.”

However, this so-called harmless high carries serious health risks. Prolonged or heavy use of nitrous oxide can lead to severe neurological damage, particularly vitamin B12 deficiency, which may cause numbness, paralysis, and in extreme cases, irreversible nerve damage. Other risks include unconsciousness, respiratory problems, and even death by asphyxiation or cardiac arrest, especially when used in confined spaces.

In the UK, the Royal College of Nursing has reported a spike in hospital admissions related to nitrous oxide, with doctors seeing young patients with symptoms similar to spinal cord injuries. A similar trend is emerging in the Netherlands, France, and Australia.

🇦🇺

Legal Responses Around the World

As nitrous oxide abuse escalates, governments are being forced to respond.

United Kingdom: In November 2023, the UK government made the possession of nitrous oxide a criminal offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It is now classified as a Class C drug, with offenders facing up to two years in prison for possession and up to 14 years for supply. This decision followed years of warnings from health professionals and law enforcement about the gas’s dangers and its role in antisocial behaviour, particularly in city centres and near nightclubs.

Netherlands: After a wave of traffic accidents linked to drivers inhaling the gas behind the wheel, the Dutch government banned the recreational use of nitrous oxide in 2023. Possession is now punishable by fines and criminal prosecution, with the law specifically targeting sale and supply to reduce its availability.

Australia: Nitrous oxide is classified differently across Australian states, with some treating it as a regulated substance and others moving toward criminalisation. Authorities in Victoria and New South Wales have increased penalties and called for tighter retail restrictions.

United States: Although nitrous oxide is a controlled substance under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it remains legal for legitimate medical and industrial purposes. However, several states have introduced their own restrictions. California, for example, limits sales to minors and imposes penalties for misuse.

Public Health vs Criminalisation

There is ongoing debate over whether criminalising nitrous oxide is the best approach. Critics argue that punitive measures may drive use underground and prevent users from seeking help. Instead, many advocate for more education, harm reduction, and mental health support for young people drawn to the drug.

On the other hand, supporters of legal restrictions believe tough laws are necessary to curb widespread abuse and protect communities from the drug’s visible social impacts — including discarded canisters littering parks, roadsides, and playgrounds.

Looking Ahead

The global abuse of nitrous oxide illustrates a broader pattern of emerging drug trends that challenge both medical and legal systems. As legislation catches up, there’s a growing need for coordinated international strategies that combine enforcement with education and healthcare support.

With youth increasingly experimenting with easily accessible substances like “nos,” tackling the issue requires more than law — it demands awareness, compassion, and prevention.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Glorious Career: A Manchester United Legacy of Honour and Triumph

Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers to ever grace the pitch, has carved out a career filled with record-breaking success, unmatched work ethic, and moments of pure magic. From a skinny teenager arriving in Manchester in 2003 to becoming a global footballing icon, Ronaldo’s journey at Manchester United is more than just a chapter in his career — it is a symbol of ambition, honour, and legacy.

The Arrival of a Young Prodigy (2003)

At just 18, Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon for £12.24 million — a staggering fee for such a young player. Sir Alex Ferguson, recognising the sheer talent and determination in the Portuguese winger, handed him the legendary No. 7 shirt — previously worn by icons like George Best, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham. The pressure was immense, but Ronaldo quickly proved he was born for greatness.

Rise to Stardom

Ronaldo’s early days at Old Trafford were a blend of dazzling footwork, lightning speed, and raw passion. While critics initially pointed to his flashy style and lack of end product, it wasn’t long before he began transforming into a complete forward. Under Ferguson’s mentorship, Ronaldo developed a lethal combination of power, accuracy, and vision.

By the 2006-07 season, Ronaldo had exploded into a world-class talent. That season, he scored 23 goals and helped United win their first Premier League title in four years. But this was only the beginning.

Best Moment: The 2007-08 Season

Arguably Ronaldo’s greatest moment at Manchester United came during the 2007-08 campaign. He scored a stunning 42 goals in all competitions — a phenomenal record for a winger — and was the driving force behind United’s Premier League and UEFA Champions League double.

The Champions League final in Moscow saw Ronaldo score a powerful header against Chelsea. Although he missed his penalty in the shootout, United still triumphed, and Ronaldo’s performances throughout the tournament earned him the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award. Later that year, he was crowned the Ballon d’Or winner, becoming the first United player since George Best in 1968 to receive the honour.

A Departure Fit for a King

In 2009, after six unforgettable seasons, Ronaldo transferred to Real Madrid for a then-world-record fee of £80 million. His tearful farewell marked the end of an era — but the love and respect between Ronaldo and Manchester United remained unbroken.

Return to Old Trafford (2021)

In August 2021, Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in a stunning move that electrified the footballing world. At 36, many doubted whether he could still deliver at the highest level. He silenced critics immediately, scoring twice on his second debut against Newcastle. Although the club faced challenges on the pitch, Ronaldo’s individual brilliance, including a hat-trick against Tottenham and crucial Champions League goals, reminded everyone of his enduring class.

An Honourable Legacy

Cristiano Ronaldo’s time at Manchester United will forever be remembered as one of the most defining chapters in the club’s history. With 145 goals in 346 appearances and countless honours, he inspired a generation of fans and players alike. More than just statistics, Ronaldo brought ambition, belief, and a relentless pursuit of greatness — values that resonate deeply with Manchester United’s identity.

In his own words, “Manchester United is in my heart.” And for millions of supporters worldwide, Ronaldo’s legacy at Old Trafford is not just about goals and trophies — it’s about honour, excellence, and unforgettable moments of footballing brilliance.

Bus Crash Horror as Roof Ripped Off by Bridge

A horrifying bus crash left multiple passengers injured after the roof of a double-decker bus was completely torn off as it smashed into a low bridge during the early morning rush hour.

The shocking incident occurred at approximately 7:45am on Tuesday in the outskirts of Manchester, when the bus — operating a regular commuter route — failed to clear the bridge’s height restriction. Witnesses described hearing a loud “explosion-like” sound as the upper deck was sheared off in an instant, scattering glass, metal, and personal belongings across the road.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where paramedics treated at least 14 people for injuries — with four rushed to hospital, including a teenage girl who was said to have suffered serious head trauma. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far.

Passengers who were seated on the top deck said they had “seconds to react” before the impact. “I just ducked instinctively when I saw the bridge coming, and then it was just chaos,” said one commuter, visibly shaken. “People were screaming, the roof was just gone.”

The bus driver, a man in his 50s, is reportedly assisting police with their inquiries. It remains unclear whether he was new to the route or if there was a GPS or signage failure that contributed to the misjudgement. Investigators are also examining whether weather or visibility played a factor.

Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed that the bridge in question had long-standing height restriction warnings in place and had been the subject of previous safety concerns. Locals claim this was a tragedy “waiting to happen,” with some demanding that more proactive safety measures be introduced — including physical height barriers or better-lit signage.

“We are extremely lucky this didn’t result in multiple deaths,” said Councillor Fiona Beecham. “This is a wake-up call for transport operators and councils across the UK to take bridge safety seriously.”

The road has been cordoned off while structural engineers assess the integrity of the bridge and clean-up crews remove the mangled remains of the bus. A full investigation is underway by police and the Department for Transport.

The crash has caused major delays across surrounding routes, with several schools and workplaces reporting affected arrivals.

Passengers and families affected by the crash are being offered support services, while the bus company has issued a statement saying they are “deeply sorry” and fully cooperating with the authorities.

This incident comes amid growing concern about aging infrastructure and driver safety training across the UK, as transport authorities are urged to act before another preventable tragedy occurs.

Dear 222 News viewers, sponsored by smileband,

Who is Andrew Bailey

Current Role: Governor of the Bank of England since 16 March 2020, serving an eight‑year term ending in March 2028.

Previous Roles: Chief Executive of the FCA (2016–2020); Deputy Governor for Prudential Regulation at the BoE (2013–2016); earlier served as Chief Cashier and Executive Director for Banking Services.

Academic Background: Born on 30 March 1959, Andrew Bailey studied history before earning a PhD from Queens’ College, Cambridge.

Key Takeaways from His Testimony

1. Defending Bank Ring-fencing Rules

Bailey emphasized that dismantling or weakening these protections—which separate high‑street banking from riskier investment arms—could expose UK households to financial shocks.

“It has benefits… for UK customers and households. I don’t think it hinders banks fundamentally… it would not be sensible to take it away”

He reiterated there’s no conflict between stability and economic growth.

2. Red Lines on Deregulation

Referring to Reeves’ comment that regulation is a “boot on the neck” of financial firms, Bailey firmly distanced himself from that metaphor.

“I do not use those terms… we can’t compromise on basic financial stability”

3. Success = When Nothing Happens

Bailey described success in his role as ensuring financial calm:

“Success in financial stability is when nothing happens… we haven’t had a financial stability problem… that is of course a success”

4. Cautious on Digital Pound

He expressed scepticism about launching a retail CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency), citing potential redundancy if commercial banks upgrade their digital payment systems effectively.

Why This Matters

Political Tensions: Chancellor Reeves, aiming to re‑energize UK growth, has proposed loosening regulations—Bailey stood as a bulwark against hasty reforms.

Financial Stability vs Growth Debate: Bailey’s testimony sets a guardrail against dismantling post‑crisis safeguards in favour of short‑term economic gains.

Market Sensitivity: Markets may react to any perceived shift in regulation tone—Bailey seems to be signalling resistance to sudden deregulation.

What’s Next

Further Scrutiny: Bailey will continue engaging with Parliament. Any policy shifts from the Treasury will be closely monitored for alignment with his warnings.

Ring-fence Rule Review: The BoE has suggested marginal tweaks may be possible—but wholesale rollback is off the table.

Summary

Andrew Bailey, a seasoned central banker, used his 22 July testimony to affirm his commitment to protecting UK financial stability—even if that means resisting government pressure for deregulation. By stressing that growth and banking safeguards can coexist, he’s drawing a clear line: post-2008 protections remain essential.

Yesterday’s Court Appearance: A Crucial Parliamentary Session

On 22 July 2025, Governor Bailey appeared before two parliamentary bodies:

1. The Treasury Select Committee (House of Commons): He defended the Bank’s role in safeguarding financial stability and stood firm against proposals by Chancellor Reeves to loosen post-2008 banking safeguards.

2. Treasury Committee & House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee: He also spoke at the Lords committee, reinforcing his view that financial stability and growth aren’t mutually exclusive.

Deborah Mason: The Matriarch of a UK Family Cocaine Empire

Deborah Mason, 65, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of orchestrating one of the most expansive family-run cocaine operations in the United Kingdom. Dubbed “Gangster Granny”, “Queen Bee”, and within her inner circle “Gangsta Debbs”, Mason led a criminal enterprise that trafficked nearly one tonne of Class A cocaine, with a street value of around £80 million (equivalent to over $100 million) during a seven-month period from April to November 2023.

How the Operation Worked

Mason recruited a close-knit team: her sister (Tina Golding), three daughters (Roseanne, Demi, Lillie), her son (Reggie Bright), their partners, and a family friend (Anita Slaughter). In total, eight family-related members were implicated.

The group used Signal—a secure encrypted messaging app—to coordinate pickups, deliveries, and payments, ensuring secrecy and message auto-deletion to evade law enforcement surveillance.

Couriers, including mothers with young children, delivered cocaine across cities: London, Bradford, Leicester, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Rotherham, Southend, Walsall, and others. Some couriers reportedly earned more than £1,000 per delivery.

Deborah Mason personally handled at least 20 trips—delivering approximately 356 kg of cocaine—and also managed cash collection duties. Her sister and children participated extensively in courier roles, with some making dozens of trips totaling hundreds of kilos.

Lifestyle and Finances

Despite claiming over £50,000 annually in state benefits during the conspiracy, Mason lived a lavish lifestyle funded by the drug trade.

She splurged on designer items, including a £400 Gucci collar and lead for her Bengal cat named Ghost, and funded holidays to Dubai, Bahrain, and planned cosmetic surgery in Turkey.

The Investigation and Legal Outcome

The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation in April 2023 after a tip-off. Surveillance tracked trips to Harwich Port, monitoring early-morning collections and nationwide drop-offs. Arrests followed in May 2024 after months of surveillance and analysis of call data and Signal messages.

Mason and her network stood trial during an 11-week prosecution at Woolwich Crown Court in July 2025. Her legal defence portrayed her as unlikely to draw suspicion; however, the jury convicted her and seven co-defendants of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, leading to a combined total of 106.5 years in prison terms. Mason received the longest sentence of 20 years.

Sentences for other members:

Daughters Roseanne and Demi Bright: 11 years each

Lillie Bright: 13 years

Son Reggie Bright: 15 years

Sister Tina Golding: 10 years

Partner Anita Slaughter: 13 years (note: Chloe Hodgkin’s sentencing is pending due to pregnancy)

Court Commentary & Wider Significance

Judge Philip Shorrock remarked that Mason acted as the operation “site foreman” under an upstream supplier referred to in court as “Bugsy”. He condemned her for corrupting her family rather than setting a positive example as a mother.

Detective Constable Jack Kraushaar, leading the Metropolitan Police investigation, described the operation as “sophisticated,” highly profitable, and damaging to UK communities. Prosecuting counsel highlighted that financial gain—often £1,000 per trip—was the primary motivation behind the conspiracy.

Why This Case Matters

Deborah Mason’s conviction marks a striking example of how organised drug trafficking can be embedded within a family structure—and led by a grandparent figure traditionally seen as nurturing and protective. Her case challenges popular stereotypes and underscores the sophisticated use of technology, the allure of quick financial gains, and the ripple effects of drug crime across communities.

Authorities believe this sentencing delivers a strong deterrent message, highlighting that involvement in coordinated drug operations—regardless of age or family relation—can result in severe legal consequences.

Mum and daughter found dead months after making desperate 999 call

Nottingham, UK – A deeply distressing inquest has opened into the deaths of 47‑year‑old Alphonsine Djiako Leuga and her 18‑year‑old daughter, Loraine Choulla, whose bodies were discovered on May 21, 2024, nearly four months after the pair made a frantic 999 call on February 2, 2024—when Alphonsine pleaded: “I need help to my daughter… I feel cold and can’t move.” They had also provided their Radford, Nottingham address.

The 999 call and missed opportunity

Alphonsine, who suffered from sickle cell anaemia, dialled 999, groaning that she was immobile and fearing for her daughter’s well‑being. She “gave details of her address in Hartley Road, Radford, Nottingham,” before the call abruptly ended Despite receiving the address, East Midlands Ambulance Service mistakenly treated the call as abandoned, closed it, and no ambulance was dispatched.

Susan Jevons, the service’s head of patient safety, conceded at the inquest that this was a “missed opportunity” and that sending an ambulance “might have been the difference between life or death”

Health, dependency, and a tragic outcome

Alphonsine had been critically ill with low iron levels in January 2024 and received a blood transfusion, after which she was discharged—partly because she needed to continue caring for Loraine, who had Down’s syndrome and was entirely dependent on her mother for basic needs.

When their bodies were finally found on May 21, the pathologist reported they had likely been deceased for “weeks to months.” Alphonsine was found to have died from pneumonia, while the exact cause of Loraine’s death remained undetermined—though dehydration or malnutrition could not be ruled out.

Ongoing inquest and broader implications

The coronial inquest, expected to last five days, is examining whether the failure to dispatch an ambulance directly contributed to these deaths. The service’s internal review will scrutinise protocol breakdowns that allowed the 999 call to be mistakenly closed.

The heartbreaking case brings urgent questions about the reliability of call handling systems and the fate of individuals who are medically vulnerable and socially isolated—especially those unable to advocate for themselves.

This tragedy extends beyond a family’s loss, highlighting systemic weaknesses in health and emergency care for vulnerable people. The upcoming inquest may offer avenues for critical change to prevent future tragedies.

MrBeast Gives Away $500,000 to Last Person Standing in a Circle

In another jaw-dropping stunt, YouTube sensation MrBeast has once again pushed the boundaries of online entertainment — this time by offering $500,000 to the last person standing in a massive circle.

The video, which dropped on MrBeast’s channel in July 2025, quickly skyrocketed to the top of trending lists, pulling in millions of views within hours. The challenge was simple in theory: 100 contestants were placed inside a giant circle, and the rules were clear — step outside the circle, and you’re out. The last person remaining inside would walk away with half a million dollars in cash.

But of course, with MrBeast, nothing is ever quite that simple.

Extreme Conditions and Twists

The challenge, filmed over several days, tested the participants’ physical and mental endurance. From brutal heat during the day to freezing conditions at night, the contestants were constantly pushed to their limits. MrBeast and his team introduced surprise challenges, sudden rule changes, and tempting cash offers to leave early.

At one point, MrBeast offered $50,000 to the next five people who stepped out, resulting in a dramatic stampede as some contestants chose a guaranteed payout over the increasingly difficult grind.

There were also surprise visits from past winners, celebrity appearances, and emotionally charged moments, as alliances formed and broke under the pressure.

Human Drama Meets Mega-Money

What made the video stand out wasn’t just the huge prize — it was the emotional journeys of the contestants. From single parents hoping to provide for their families to college students aiming to pay off debt, each person had a reason to fight for the prize. MrBeast showcased many of these personal stories, adding depth and drama to the spectacle.

In the end, after over 100 hours of standing, sleeping, and surviving in the circle, the final winner broke down in tears as MrBeast handed over a briefcase packed with $500,000 in cash.

A New Benchmark in YouTube Entertainment

Known for his philanthropic stunts and next-level productions, MrBeast (real name Jimmy Donaldson) has once again proven why he’s considered the king of YouTube. The video wasn’t just a viral hit — it was a carefully crafted event blending entertainment, human resilience, and financial life-change.

Fans praised the episode for its intensity, editing, and emotional storytelling. Many online are calling it one of MrBeast’s best videos to date.

With each challenge he releases, MrBeast continues to raise the bar. As for what’s next — only time will tell. But if there’s one thing fans can expect, it’s that the stakes will keep getting higher.

MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) is known for spending massive amounts of money to produce his YouTube videos — often millions of dollars per video, depending on the scale and concept.

Typical Costs Per Video:

Smaller Challenges or Giveaways:

These can cost $100,000 to $500,000, including prizes, crew, location, props, and editing.

Larger Events (like Squid Game or Last to Leave Challenges):

These can cost $1 million to $3.5 million or more.

For example:

“Squid Game in Real Life” (2021) cost over $3.5 million to produce.

His “1,000 Blind People See for the First Time” video cost nearly $1 million (including surgeries and production).

Giveaway Videos (like buying a private island or giving away a jet):

These often cost over $1 million just for the prize alone — not counting production.

Where the Money Goes:

Cash prizes and giveaways

Set design, custom builds, and rented locations

Camera crews, editors, and production staff

Travel, logistics, and insurance

Sponsorship fees and video promotion

MrBeast reinvests a huge portion of his revenue straight back into his videos. He’s openly said he often breaks even or takes a loss on his main channel videos, making up for it through brand deals, merch (Feastables and Beast Burger), and his other channels.

 Why It Works

Despite the high cost, the investment pays off. MrBeast’s videos regularly get tens to hundreds of millions of views, which translates to:

Millions in ad revenue

Increased brand deals and sponsorships

Global media coverage

In short, MrBeast may spend more than any other individual creator on YouTube, but it’s all part of a high-risk, high-reward strategy that keeps him at the top of the platform.

The Most Powerful AI Glasses of 2025: A Glimpse Into the Future of Wearable Intelligence

Tech World, Global

In 2025, wearable technology has taken a massive leap forward, with AI-powered smart glasses at the forefront of this revolution. These glasses go far beyond the simple displays and notifications of their early predecessors — they are now intelligent, real-time assistants, capable of transforming everyday life. Leading the charge is the Apple Vision Pro AR Glasses 2, widely regarded as the most powerful AI glasses available today.

What Makes the Apple Vision Pro AR Glasses 2 So Powerful?

1. On-Device GPT-Level Intelligence

Apple has integrated a custom version of OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 into the glasses, running entirely on-device using Apple’s M4 chip. This means users can interact with a highly advanced AI assistant even without an internet connection — capable of generating messages, summarizing long documents, translating conversations live, and even detecting tone and emotion in voice.

2. Seamless Augmented Reality Experience

The Apple Vision Pro 2 offers a seamless blend of the real and digital worlds. Through ultra-clear microLED displays and LiDAR-powered environmental mapping, users can see directions overlaid on the street, review emails as floating holograms, or get instant object recognition — all hands-free.

3. Real-Time Multilingual Translation

These AI glasses allow for face-to-face conversations with anyone, anywhere, thanks to real-time multilingual translation. The wearer hears the translated voice in their preferred language through spatial audio, while subtitles appear in their field of view.

4. Privacy-Focused Eye and Gesture Control

Instead of using voice commands in public, the Vision Pro 2 lets users control everything with subtle eye movements and finger gestures. This keeps interactions discreet and private, while also reducing the need to speak out loud in crowded environments.

Other Notable Contenders in 2025

While Apple leads the market, several other companies have released competitive AI glasses:

Meta Ray-Ban AR Pro 2025: A stylish pair of smart glasses combining Meta’s Llama 3 AI model with Ray-Ban’s iconic design. Optimized for creators, these glasses can record, edit, and post content hands-free.

Samsung Galaxy AR Glasses X: These glasses shine in productivity, offering Samsung’s own generative AI model integrated with Microsoft Office tools, allowing users to write emails, create slides, and manage spreadsheets via voice and gestures.

Xiaomi SmartView Pro: Known for affordability, Xiaomi’s glasses provide most AI functions seen in high-end competitors at half the price, making powerful AI accessible to developing markets.

Daily Life, Transformed

With these AI glasses, users in 2025 are able to:

Navigate cities hands-free with turn-by-turn directions overlaid in their vision.

Conduct business meetings on the go, reading notes and speaking to international clients in any language.

Recognize people through facial recognition (opt-in), pulling up names, past interactions, and shared documents.

Get health insights by scanning food items or monitoring eye fatigue and posture.

Stay focused with AI that filters out distractions and helps maintain concentration.

Challenges Ahead

Despite their power, AI glasses in 2025 still face questions over privacy, data ownership, and regulation. Governments are pushing for clearer boundaries on facial recognition, data harvesting, and surveillance concerns, especially in public spaces.

Conclusion

The most powerful AI glasses of 2025 represent not just a technological achievement, but a shift in how humans interact with the world. With constant upgrades and tighter AI integration, it’s no longer science fiction — your smart assistant now lives on your face.

As we look ahead, the future of AI glasses may become as commonplace as smartphones — and perhaps even replace them.

London Police and Immigration Crackdown on Delivery Drivers Suspected of Illegal Working

Major enforcement operation targeting gig-economy migration compliance

In early July 2025, Immigration Enforcement teams joined forces with the Metropolitan Police in a large-scale operation across London, focusing on delivery riders suspected of working illegally—especially those residing in state-funded asylum accommodation.

 The Raid

The operation targeted individuals working for food delivery platforms like Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Just Eat, despite being barred from employment during the first year of their asylum claim or while receiving government financial support  .

At least ten men were confronted near Thistle City Barbican hotel in central London—some returning from delivery runs with company-branded bags on bikes. Officers confiscated phones and e‑bikes, directed suspects to unlock delivery apps, and made multiple arrests for illegal working and bail breaches.

 Statistics & Context

Between July 2023 and May 2024, there was a 51% year-on-year increase in arrests related to illegal working in the gig economy.

Nationally, over 7,130 arrests and 10,000+ enforcement visits were made for illegal work—some of the highest levels recorded in recent years.

Government and Corporate Responses

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper endorsed the operation and pledged further crackdowns, including more intensive facial recognition checks and seizure of delivery equipment.

Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Just Eat were summoned to a Home Office meeting shortly after the raids. They agreed to:

Increase frequency of facial verification to daily checks.

Introduce selfie and device checks to prevent unauthorized account sharing or substitution riders.

Controversy and Union Response

Critics—including delivery unions like the IWGB, trade union groups, and local MPs—have raised concerns over racial profiling and heavy-handed tactics:

A protest in Tooting saw over 100 residents march in solidarity with targeted riders, accusing enforcement of targeting minority workers under a guise of identity checks.

Critics warn these raids risk stigmatising vulnerable migrant workers and may deter them from reporting crimes or seeking legitimate work.
