Armed Man Shot Dead After Entering Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Estate

A man was shot and killed by law enforcement early Sunday morning after breaching the secure perimeter of Mar‑a‑Lago — the Palm Beach, Florida resort owned by U.S. President Donald Trump — in a dramatic security incident that has raised questions about motive, mental health and protection protocols.

What Happened

At around 1:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy encountered a man who had unauthorisedly entered the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago secure perimeter. Officials say the individual was carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel canister when he was ordered to drop the items.

According to law enforcement, the man set down the fuel can but then raised the shotgun in a shooting position when confronted. At that point, officers opened fire, fatally wounding him at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured.

Identity and Investigation

Authorities have since identified the man as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin, a resident of North Carolina who had been reported missing by his family several days earlier. Investigators believe he traveled south toward Florida, acquiring the shotgun along the way, though his motive remains unclear.

The FBI has taken over the investigation and is asking nearby residents to review surveillance footage that might shed light on the circumstances leading up to the confrontation and what drove Martin to target the property. Officials are also working on compiling a psychological profile.

Where President Trump Was

President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident. He and First Lady Melania Trump were in Washington, D.C., attending official events at the White House.

Context and Security History

The shooting marks the latest in a series of high-profile security breaches and attacks involving Trump’s properties. Over the past several years, Trump has faced multiple threats, including assassination attempts during the 2024 U.S. election campaign and other trespassing incidents at Mar-a-Lago, some linked to individuals with apparent mental health struggles.

Officials have underscored that the Secret Service responded quickly and decisively to neutralize what they deemed a potentially deadly threat, while also highlighting ongoing challenges in guarding high-profile figures amid persistent violence and political polarization.
