Donald Trump warns of US retaliation if Iran attacks Qatar again

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply after former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran, vowing that the United States would respond with force if Tehran launches further attacks on Qatar.

The warning follows a wave of violence triggered by an Israeli strike on Iran’s crucial South Pars gas field—one of the world’s largest energy reserves, jointly shared with Qatar. In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone strikes across the Gulf, including targeting key energy infrastructure in Qatar.

Speaking amid the growing crisis, Trump made it clear that any repeat attack on Qatari territory would provoke a strong U.S. military response. He emphasised that Qatar is a key regional ally and insisted it had no involvement in the original strike on Iran’s gas facilities.

According to reports, Trump warned Iran against escalating the situation further, stating that the U.S. would not hesitate to retaliate if Qatari assets were hit again.  Some accounts suggest he even threatened devastating action against Iran’s energy infrastructure if such attacks continue.

Escalating conflict across the Gulf

The crisis has already had major consequences. Iranian strikes reportedly hit Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial area—home to one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities—causing significant disruption to global energy supplies.

Other Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, have also been targeted, raising fears that the conflict could spiral into a wider regional war. Oil and gas prices have surged as markets react to the instability, with key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz under increasing threat.

A fragile regional balance

Trump has attempted to distance the United States from the initial Israeli strike, although reports suggest Washington may have had prior knowledge of the operation.  Regardless, the U.S. position has shifted firmly toward deterrence, with a clear message aimed at Tehran: further aggression against Qatar will not go unanswered.

Meanwhile, global leaders have called for restraint as fears grow of a prolonged and devastating conflict that could destabilise the global economy and energy markets.

Outlook

With Iran warning it could escalate its response and the United States pledging retaliation, the situation remains highly volatile. The next moves from both sides will likely determine whether the crisis can be contained—or whether it expands into a broader confrontation across the Middle East.
