Man Jailed After FaceTime Assault on Woman Sparks Outrage

A man who carried out a disturbing online attack during a FaceTime call has been jailed for three years, in a case that has raised fresh concerns about digital abuse and violence against women.

Matvei Rumiantsev was sentenced at court after being found guilty of assaulting a woman while on a live video call with another individual identified as Barton Trump. The incident, which took place remotely but had very real consequences, was described by prosecutors as “deeply distressing” and “aggravated by the presence of an audience.”

According to the court, Rumiantsev subjected the woman to physical violence while knowingly broadcasting the incident over FaceTime. The live nature of the call added a further layer of humiliation and trauma for the victim, who was said to have suffered both physical injuries and lasting emotional harm.

The prosecution argued that the involvement of a third party on the call demonstrated a “callous disregard” for the victim’s dignity and safety. The court heard that the woman had not consented to being filmed or having the incident shared in any way.

In sentencing, the judge condemned Rumiantsev’s actions, highlighting the increasing role technology can play in facilitating abuse. “This was not only an act of violence,” the judge said, “but one compounded by the deliberate decision to expose it to others in real time.”

Rumiantsev was handed a three-year prison sentence, with the judge noting that a custodial term was necessary to reflect the seriousness of the offence and to act as a deterrent.

The case has sparked wider discussion about the misuse of video-calling platforms and the need for greater awareness around digital accountability. Campaigners say it underlines how abuse is evolving in the digital age, where perpetrators may use technology to intimidate, control, or further harm victims.

Support organisations have urged anyone experiencing abuse—whether in person or online—to seek help, stressing that incidents carried out via digital platforms are still criminal offences and should be reported.

The victim in the case is receiving ongoing support. Meanwhile, authorities have reiterated that crimes involving violence against women will be treated with the utmost seriousness, regardless of whether they occur behind closed doors or through a screen.
