Grime Legend Dot Rotten Dies Aged 37

The UK music world is mourning the loss of grime pioneer Dot Rotten, who has died at the age of 37. The rapper and producer’s family confirmed his passing on 9 March, sending shockwaves through the British music scene and prompting tributes from fellow artists and fans.  

Born Joseph Ellis-Stevenson in South London, Dot Rotten emerged as one of the most influential figures in the early grime movement. Growing up in Lambeth, he began making music at a remarkably young age and was already experimenting with production by the time he was a child.  

He first gained attention under the name Young Dot, releasing his debut mixtape This Is the Beginning in 2007 before adopting the stage name Dot Rotten. His “Rotten Riddims” series of instrumentals quickly became highly respected within the underground grime community and helped cement his reputation as both a talented MC and producer.  

Dot Rotten went on to achieve mainstream success in 2012 with the single “Overload”, which reached the Top 20 of the UK Singles Chart and earned widespread radio play. The track was deeply personal, touching on his struggles with depression and demonstrating the emotional depth behind his music.  

Throughout his career he collaborated with major artists including Ed Sheeran, Chip and D Double E, bridging the gap between grime’s underground roots and mainstream pop audiences. He was also nominated for the BBC Sound of 2012 poll, highlighting his rising influence at the time.  

Later in his career, he also worked under the name Zeph Ellis, focusing more on production and contributing to tracks for artists such as Kano and other UK rap talents.  

The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been publicly confirmed, though reports suggest he may have passed away in Gambia.  

Tributes have flooded social media from across the music industry, with fellow artists describing Dot Rotten as one of the most influential figures in grime’s history and a pioneer who helped shape the sound of UK rap.  

His legacy remains deeply embedded in the culture of British music. From early mixtapes that inspired a generation of MCs to chart-topping hits and groundbreaking productions, Dot Rotten leaves behind a body of work that helped define grime for more than a decade.
