Former Footballer Joey Barton Charged With Wounding With Intent

Former England international and Premier League midfielder Joey Barton has been charged with wounding with intent, following an alleged violent incident near a golf club in Merseyside. The charge relates to a serious assault that reportedly left a man hospitalised with significant injuries.  

Alleged assault near Liverpool

Emergency services were called at around 9pm on Sunday (8 March 2026) to reports of an assault near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside. When police and paramedics arrived, they discovered a man suffering from serious injuries to his face, ribs, and body.  

The victim was taken to hospital and is reported to be in a serious but stable condition, according to Merseyside Police.  

Authorities later arrested Barton, 43, along with Gary O’Grady, 50, from Huyton. Both men have now been formally charged with Section 18 wounding with intent, which is one of the most serious forms of grievous bodily harm under UK law.  

Court appearance

Barton, who is from Widnes in Cheshire, was expected to appear before Wirral Magistrates’ Court shortly after being charged. Police investigations remain ongoing, with officers reportedly searching the scene and gathering evidence following the incident.  

Under UK law, a conviction for Section 18 wounding with intent can carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, although sentences vary depending on the circumstances and severity of the case.  

A controversial career

Barton had a long but controversial career in professional football. During his playing days he represented several clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, Burnley FC, and Rangers FC. He also earned one international cap for England in 2007.  

Since retiring from playing, Barton moved into management with clubs such as Fleetwood Town FC and Bristol Rovers FC, and later began hosting a podcast discussing sport and politics.  

However, his career has frequently been overshadowed by disciplinary issues and legal controversies. Barton has previously faced criminal charges related to assaults and other incidents throughout his career.  

Investigation continues

Police say the investigation into the alleged assault is ongoing as authorities gather further evidence and witness statements.

The case is likely to draw significant public attention due to Barton’s high-profile football career and long history of controversies both on and off the pitch.

If convicted, the former Premier League midfielder could face serious legal consequences, with the court expected to determine the next steps in the case in the coming weeks.
