Chris Brown Ordered to Pay Nearly $13 Million After Housekeeper Mauled by Dog
R&B singer Chris Brown has been ordered by a Los Angeles jury to pay nearly $13 million in damages after one of his dogs brutally attacked his former housekeeper at his California home.
The civil lawsuit stems from an incident in December 2020, when Maria Avila, who worked at Brown’s Tarzana property, was attacked by a 200-pound Caucasian Shepherd named Hades while taking out the rubbish. According to court testimony, the dog inflicted severe injuries, leaving Avila with permanent facial disfigurement, nerve damage and long-term physical and emotional trauma.
Following a two-week trial, the jury found Brown liable for negligence and awarded Avila $12.9 million in damages. Her sister, who was also working at the property at the time, was awarded $885,000, while Avila’s husband received $50,000 for the impact the attack had on their family.
During the trial, Brown acknowledged that he left the scene shortly after the attack, saying he acted on advice from his manager because he feared media attention. He also testified that the dog was kept on the property for security purposes and claimed he had warned staff about its aggressive behaviour. Avila disputed that claim, arguing she had never been properly warned before the attack.
The lawsuit was first filed in 2021 and concluded after several years of legal proceedings. Attorneys representing Avila said the verdict reflected the seriousness of the injuries she suffered and the lasting impact the attack has had on her life.
The ruling adds to Brown’s history of legal challenges. Despite the civil judgment, the singer continues to perform and is currently on tour. He is also due to face separate legal proceedings in the United Kingdom relating to an unrelated alleged assault case.
