Failed Asylum Seeker Jailed After Arriving at School Armed with Weapons
A failed asylum seeker has been jailed after arriving at a secondary school in Greater Manchester carrying a hammer, a hatchet, a kitchen knife and a container of petrol in an incident that sparked a major police response.
Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard that 21-year-old Both Douk Deng, a South Sudanese national whose asylum applications had been refused on three occasions, entered the grounds of Edgar Wood Academy in Heywood while the school was closed during the summer holidays.
Builders working on the site became concerned after seeing Deng acting erratically and contacted police. Officers quickly arrived and arrested him before anyone was harmed.
Police recovered a hammer, a hatchet, a seven-inch kitchen knife and a jerry can containing petrol. CCTV footage presented in court showed Deng walking around the school grounds and behaving suspiciously before his arrest.
The court also heard that a day earlier Deng had visited another nearby school, where he caused damage to an intercom system.
During sentencing, prosecutors said there was no evidence that Deng intended to attack pupils or staff, as the school was closed at the time. His defence argued that he was suffering from frustration and isolation after repeated failures to secure asylum and employment, and had sought to attract attention to his situation.
Deng pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including possession of offensive weapons and criminal damage. He was sentenced to two years in prison.
The incident has prompted renewed debate over public safety, the handling of failed asylum seekers and the speed at which immigration cases are resolved. Police praised the swift actions of construction workers who reported the suspicious behaviour, preventing what could have become a far more serious incident.
Authorities have reassured the public that there was no threat to children during the incident because the school was closed for the summer break. The case nevertheless serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and rapid reporting of suspicious activity.
