Former California Clinician Arrested Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Former Client
A former California behavioral health clinician has been arrested and charged following allegations that she engaged in an unlawful sexual relationship with a former teenage client after he was released from juvenile detention.
According to prosecutors in Contra Costa County, Sofia Ann-Buitron Drotts, 26, was taken into custody after an investigation into allegations that she groomed and sexually abused a 17-year-old male who had previously been under her professional care. Authorities allege that she was assigned as the teenager’s clinician while he was housed at the John A. Davis Juvenile Detention Center in Martinez.
Prosecutors have filed multiple felony charges against Drotts, including allegations relating to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, sending harmful material to a minor, and possession of child sexual abuse material. The charges stem from alleged conduct that investigators say occurred after the teenager’s release from detention.
The investigation reportedly began after information was provided to law enforcement by the Contra Costa County Probation Department. Concord Police arrested Drotts on July 14, and the case has since been referred to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
The alleged victim’s family has also filed a legal claim against Contra Costa County, alleging that the teenager was groomed and sexually exploited by someone entrusted with his care. The claim argues that safeguards failed to protect a vulnerable young person while he was receiving behavioral health services.
Contra Costa Health has acknowledged the case but has stated that, because it is both an active criminal investigation and a personnel matter, it cannot comment further.
At the time of writing, Drotts has been charged but has not been convicted. She is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the allegations will be tested through the court process.
The case has raised renewed concerns about professional boundaries, safeguarding procedures, and the protection of vulnerable young people receiving mental health treatment. Authorities have encouraged anyone with information relevant to the investigation to contact law enforcement.
