Massive Explosion Rocks Essex as Major Incident Declared
A massive explosion and fire at an industrial site in Rettendon, Essex, has prompted emergency services to declare a major incident, with more than 100 firefighters deployed to tackle the blaze.
The explosion occurred on Friday afternoon after a fire spread to a fertiliser storage area, triggering a powerful blast that was heard and felt across large parts of Essex. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky and was visible for miles, while nearby residents reported feeling the shockwave from their homes.
Emergency crews responded in large numbers, with firefighters working throughout the evening to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding industrial buildings and nearby farmland. Roads in the area were closed, and residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut because of the heavy smoke. Authorities also evacuated nearby properties as a precaution.
The East of England Ambulance Service declared a critical incident to support the emergency response. According to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, 20 firefighters were taken to hospital following the explosion. Four sustained minor injuries, while the remaining firefighters underwent precautionary assessments, including checks for hearing damage caused by the blast. All have since been discharged from hospital
Three fire engines and two additional emergency vehicles were damaged or destroyed during the incident, highlighting the intensity of the explosion and the dangerous conditions faced by emergency responders. Fire officials praised the courage and professionalism of the crews who battled the blaze under extremely hazardous circumstances.
Investigators are now working to establish the exact cause of the fire and the subsequent fertiliser explosion. Officials have not indicated that there is any ongoing threat to the public, although emergency services remain at the site to deal with remaining hotspots and ensure the area is safe.
The incident has become one of the largest industrial fires seen in Essex in recent years, with dramatic images and videos of the explosion rapidly spreading across social media. Local authorities have thanked residents for following safety advice and have urged the public to continue avoiding the area while investigations continue.
