El Mayo Sentenced to Life in U.S. Federal Prison
Brooklyn, New York — Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, one of the founding leaders of Mexico’s notorious Sinaloa Cartel, has been sentenced to life in prison by a U.S. federal court, bringing an end to one of the longest-running criminal careers in the history of international drug trafficking.
The 76-year-old cartel leader pleaded guilty to charges including participating in a continuing criminal enterprise, racketeering, and large-scale drug trafficking. U.S. prosecutors said he spent decades directing the movement of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl into the United States while overseeing a violent criminal organization.
Alongside the life sentence, the court ordered Zambada to forfeit up to $15 billion, representing proceeds linked to the cartel’s drug trafficking operations. However, analysts caution that the Sinaloa Cartel remains active despite the imprisonment of many of its senior leaders, with rival factions continuing to compete for control in parts of Mexico.
