Southport Killer Attacks Prison Officer with Boiling Water at HMP Belmarsh

Axel Rudakubana, the 18-year-old convicted of the brutal murders of three young girls in Southport, has allegedly assaulted a prison officer at HMP Belmarsh by throwing boiling water over him. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon within the high-security facility. The officer was hospitalized at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and later discharged the same day.  

Rudakubana is serving a minimum 52-year sentence for the July 2024 attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, where he fatally stabbed three girls—Bebe King, 6; Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7; and Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9—and injured ten others, including two adults.  He also pleaded guilty to charges related to the production of ricin and possession of terrorist materials. 

Following the prison assault, authorities are investigating how Rudakubana accessed boiling water. He has been placed under strict isolation.  This incident has intensified concerns about the safety of prison staff, especially in high-security facilities housing dangerous offenders.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced measures to enhance prison officer safety, including trials of Taser use and a review of body armor provisions.  The Prison Officers’ Association has previously warned that Rudakubana would be a “number one target” for reprisal attacks from fellow inmates, necessitating his segregation for protection. 

The assault on the prison officer underscores the ongoing challenges within the UK’s prison system in managing high-risk inmates and ensuring the safety of staff.

India Launches Missile Strikes on Pakistan Amid Escalating Tensions 

In a significant escalation of hostilities, India has launched missile strikes targeting multiple sites within Pakistan, marking one of the most severe confrontations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in recent years. The operation, codenamed “Operation Sindoor,” was initiated in response to a deadly militant attack on Indian tourists in Kashmir last month. 

Background: The Pahalgam Attack

On April 22, 2025, a terrorist assault in the Pahalgam region of Indian-administered Kashmir resulted in the deaths of 28 civilians, predominantly Hindu tourists. India attributed the attack to The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, though the group later denied responsibility. The incident intensified longstanding tensions between India and Pakistan over the disputed Kashmir region. 

Operation Sindoor: India’s Offensive

In the early hours of May 7, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” a 23-minute precision strike targeting what it described as terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan. Utilizing Rafale fighter jets equipped with SCALP cruise missiles and AASM Hammer bombs, the Indian Air Force struck nine locations, including Bahawalpur, Muridke, Sialkot, and Muzaffarabad. India claimed the operation eliminated over 100 militants, including key figures associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. 

Pakistan’s Response: Operation Bunyan al-Marsus

Pakistan’s military reported intercepting multiple Indian missiles and claimed to have shot down several Indian fighter jets, though these claims have not been independently verified. The cross-border strikes have resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement on both sides. Reports indicate that at least 60 civilians have been killed, with thousands forced to flee their homes in the Kashmir region. Major cities, including Delhi, have experienced panic buying and disruptions to daily life. International actors, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, and the G7, have expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict and have called for immediate de-escalation and dialogue. 

Ceasefire Attempts and Ongoing Tensions

Despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire announced on May 10, hostilities have continued. India has accused Pakistan of violating the ceasefire agreement, citing explosions and drone intrusions in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Pakistan has denied these allegations, urging restraint and communication to address violations. Both nations have engaged in high-level security meetings, but a lasting resolution remains elusive.
