FORMER POLICE SERGEANT CAMPBELL PETRIE JAILED FOR 12 YEARS OVER RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF TWO WOMEN
Former Police Scotland officer handed an extended 15-year sentence after being convicted of nine offences spanning almost 17 years.
A former police sergeant has been jailed for 12 years after being convicted of a series of serious sexual and violent offences against two women, in a case that has raised troubling questions about abuse, trust and the protection of victims.
Campbell Petrie, 50, was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday, 16 October 2026. The former Police Scotland officer was convicted in September of nine charges, including two counts of rape, indecent assault, assault with intent to rape, and assault involving injury and danger to life. The offences took place between 2006 and 2023. confirmed the conviction and sentence.
A 15-year extended sentence
Judge Alistair Watson imposed an extended sentence of 15 years, comprising 12 years in prison followed by three years of extended supervision in the community.
The judge described the sustained pattern of abuse as extremely serious and highlighted the lasting psychological harm suffered by both women. He also expressed concern that Petrie continued to deny responsibility despite the jury’s verdict.
The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offending and the court’s assessment that additional supervision would be necessary to protect the public following his release.
Offences committed while serving as a police officer
Petrie was a serving officer when the offences occurred. He was arrested, charged and suspended from duty in December 2023, before retiring from Police Scotland in December 2025.
The case involved two former partners and a prolonged pattern of sexual and physical abuse. Evidence presented during the trial described behaviour that included intimidation, controlling conduct and sexual assaults.
The convictions demonstrate the importance of investigating allegations of serious criminality regardless of an individual’s position or professional status.
Victims’ courage recognised by the court
During sentencing, the judge acknowledged the courage shown by both women in reporting what had happened and giving evidence through the criminal proceedings.
He recognised that the experiences had caused deep and enduring psychological harm, with the consequences continuing to affect their lives.
Police Scotland also praised the women for coming forward and stressed that allegations against serving or retired officers must be taken seriously and investigated.
Protecting public trust
The case raises difficult questions about how institutions respond to allegations of abuse, particularly when the accused person is employed to uphold the law.
Police officers hold positions of public responsibility, and criminal convictions involving sexual violence can seriously undermine public confidence. Effective investigations, support for victims and accountability are essential to maintaining trust.
Petrie has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely and is subject to non-harassment orders protecting both women.
Conclusion
The imprisonment of Campbell Petrie marks the conclusion of a serious criminal case involving two women who endured years of abuse. The court recognised the lasting harm they suffered and imposed a substantial custodial sentence alongside extended supervision.
Their courage in coming forward highlights the importance of ensuring that victims can report abuse and receive support, even when allegations concern someone who once held a position of authority.
