Some have backgrounds in theatre or dance, lending them the finesse needed to operate with uncanny dexterity. Others have been trained in distraction techniques and sleight of hand, passed down through generations or learned in underground networks that span across Europe.
Oxford Street has become a hunting ground not only because of the sheer volume of foot traffic—up to half a million people per day—but also because of the air of distraction. Tourists snap photos, check maps, and fumble with their shopping. Commuters juggle takeaway coffees and phones. In such a chaotic setting, even the most security-conscious individuals can be caught off guard.
