Date & route: On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner, took off from Ahmedabad, India, en route to London Gatwick. 

Fatalities & casualties: Of the 242 passengers and crew, 241 died, including at least 24 people on the ground. Only one British-Indian passenger, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived. 

Ground impact: The aircraft crashed into a residential area and a hostel of medical students—at least 50 students were hospitalized and many houses were damaged. 

Preliminary cause: Investigators noted the aircraft struggled to gain altitude, and the final signal was recorded less than a minute after takeoff—issues with landing gear, flap settings, or engine thrust are under scrutiny. 

Investigation & response: Indian, U.K., and U.S. agencies (FAA, NTSB, Boeing) are collaborating on the investigation. Boeing, Air India, and authorities are offering support and compensation — Music $116,000 per victim pledged by Air India-owned Tata Sons. 

World leaders have expressed condolences, including Indian PM Narendra Modi, UK PM Keir Starmer, and King Charles III. 

Mark Wright’s apology controversy

On the same day as the crash, former reality star Mark Wright shared a pre-scheduled Instagram post featuring himself, wife Michelle Keegan, and their baby in front of a private jet, joking about cramped legroom in row 26. The timing ignited backlash: “not really appropriate to put this up after today’s plane crash,” and “poor taste given today’s event”  

Wright deleted the photo and explained that the post had been scheduled last week and released “by horrendous coincidence.” He issued a public apology:

“I apologise for a post I just put up on my page after today’s heartbreaking events… I immediately deleted [it]. My heart goes out to everyone… I’m sorry for this mistake and any offence caused.”
