US Responds to Iranian Nuclear Threat as Starmer Backs Bunker-Busting Bombs

Washington, D.C. / London

The United States has taken decisive steps in response to the growing threat posed by Iran’s expanding nuclear programme, with intelligence revealing Tehran has moved critical uranium enrichment activities deep underground—beyond the reach of conventional weapons. The Biden administration has confirmed the deployment of advanced military assets to the Middle East, including B-2 Spirit stealth bombers and bunker-busting ordnance, as part of a clear message to Iran: nuclear escalation will not be tolerated.

US officials say the underground facility near Natanz, built deep within a mountain, could be operational within months and may represent the final stage of Iran’s break from the 2015 nuclear agreement, which it began violating following the US withdrawal under former President Trump.

US Military Posture Hardens

A Pentagon statement on Friday confirmed preparations for potential strikes using GBU-57 “Massive Ordnance Penetrator” bombs—each capable of smashing through 60 metres of concrete and earth. Satellite images reportedly show Iranian engineers reinforcing the site’s entrance, prompting fears that enriched uranium stockpiles may be shielded against pre-emptive attacks.

“We do not seek war,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, “but we will not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. All options remain on the table, including military ones.”

UK’s Keir Starmer: “We Will Stand With Our Allies”

In an unusual move, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer voiced strong support for Washington’s stance. When questioned by MPs during an emergency defence session in Parliament, Starmer said Britain “reserves the right to assist in containing nuclear threats wherever they emerge,” and acknowledged that support for bunker-busting strikes on Iranian facilities would be considered if diplomacy fails.

“This is not about aggression—it’s about global security,” Starmer told MPs. “The UK is committed to the safety of our allies and the prevention of nuclear proliferation. Iran cannot be allowed to destabilise the region with impunity.”

Labour backbenchers expressed unease, with some urging caution amid fears of triggering a wider Middle Eastern conflict. However, government officials said contingency plans are underway, and UK forces in Cyprus have reportedly increased readiness levels.

International Response and Tensions Rising

The United Nations has called for restraint, urging both sides to return to the negotiating table. But hopes for diplomacy are fading, as Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei doubled down on Tehran’s right to “nuclear self-defence” and warned of “painful consequences” if attacked.

Israel, which has long viewed Iran’s nuclear ambitions as an existential threat, has welcomed the US-UK posture. Prime Minister Benny Gantz said his government is “prepared to act independently if required.”

Conclusion

As the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran intensifies, the US and UK are increasingly aligned in their readiness to take military action, including the use of powerful bunker-busting bombs. While no final decision has been made, both nations appear to be laying the groundwork for strikes should Tehran continue to defy international warnings.

The coming weeks may determine whether diplomacy can still work—or whether the world is heading towards a new and dangerous confrontation in the Middle East.
