Trump’s Remarks on Air Force One (July 29, 2025)

While departing Scotland on July 29, 2025, President Trump addressed reporters aboard Air Force One. He confirmed he and PM Keir Starmer did not discuss the UK’s plan to recognise a Palestinian state in September, saying:

“We never did discuss it. We have no view on that”

Responding to the proposed recognition, Trump warned it could be seen as rewarding Hamas, stating:

“You could make a case that you’re rewarding Hamas … I’m not in that camp”

He also addressed the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, expressing skepticism of Israeli denials of starvation and announcing plans for the U.S. to set up food centres inside Gaza.

“Those children look very hungry”

Starmer’s Position and the UK Recognition Plan

Recognition of a Palestinian State

On July 29, 2025, PM Keir Starmer announced that the UK would formally recognise a Palestinian state by the UN General Assembly in September, unless Israel implemented several conditions: a ceasefire in Gaza, substantially improved humanitarian access, a halt to West Bank annexation plans, and renewed negotiations toward a two‑state solution.

He framed the decision as driven by mounting images and evidence of starvation in Gaza, emphasising Britain’s commitment to achieving a “safe and secure” Israel alongside a “viable and sovereign” Palestine.

Starmer’s Broader Foreign Policy on Gaza

Starmer’s government continues to uphold Israel’s right to self‑defence while condemning its military actions and calling for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid.

In May 2025, Starmer issued a joint statement with France and Canada denouncing Israel’s Gaza offensive, warning of potential ethnic cleaning and committing to “concrete actions” if the operations continued.

In March 2025, Foreign Secretary David Lammy described Israel’s blockade of aid into Gaza as a violation of international law—but Starmer’s office publicly rejected that legal framing, indicating that it should be left to courts.

In September 2024, Starmer’s government suspended dozens of arms export licences to Israel due to legal risks under international humanitarian law but didn’t fully ban all military trade.

How the Pieces Connect

Setting: Scotland Meeting at Turnberry

Trump hosted Starmer at his Turnberry golf resort in southwestern Scotland on July 28, 2025, marking a high‑profile meeting where they covered topics from Gaza to trade and Ukraine.

Ahead of that meeting, Starmer raised the UK‑led peace initiative, pressing for a ceasefire and emphasising humanitarian imperatives.

The Clash: Trump on Recognition vs Starmer’s Push

Starmer’s public plan for UK recognition of Palestinian statehood was not raised or shared during the Scotland meeting, according to Trump.

Trump’s framing positions recognition as dangerous appeasement—which contrasts sharply with Starmer’s moral and political urgency to act in light of humanitarian catastrophe.

Final Thoughts

Trump, speaking from Air Force One as he departed Scotland on July 29, 2025, made clear that he and Starmer had not discussed the UK’s recognition plans, and warned that such a step risked rewarding Hamas.

Starmer has taken a bold stance grounded in humanitarian urgency, promising Palestinian recognition unless Israel swiftly adopts ceasefire and peace-making commitments—and doing so in coordination with allies like France.

This episode highlights a growing divergence: U.S. caution and criticism of UK policy, contrasted with Starmer’s assertive diplomatic and moral response to the dire situation in Gaza..
