Coach Crashes in Somerset While Returning from School Trip

A school trip ended in tragedy yesterday evening when a coach carrying pupils and staff from a secondary school crashed on its return journey in Somerset. Emergency services rushed to the scene near the A39 close to Bridgwater, where the vehicle veered off the road and overturned.

The coach, which had been transporting students aged between 12 and 15, was returning from a day trip to a local historical site when the crash occurred at approximately 6:15pm. Initial reports suggest that heavy rain and reduced visibility may have played a role in the incident.

A total of 47 people were on board, including teachers and the driver. According to South Western Ambulance Service, at least 18 pupils suffered injuries—two of whom were airlifted to hospital with suspected serious but non-life-threatening conditions. The remaining injured were treated at the scene or taken by road ambulance to nearby hospitals for further care.

Parents were notified shortly after the crash, and a dedicated emergency contact centre was set up by the local council to assist worried families. One parent, whose daughter was on the trip, said: “I got a call from the school and just froze. Thankfully my child is safe but shaken. I can’t imagine what some of the other families are going through.”

Somerset Police confirmed they are investigating the crash. A spokesperson said, “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this frightening incident. A full investigation into the cause is underway, and we will be working closely with the coach company and school.”

The school, which has not yet been named publicly due to safeguarding concerns, is expected to remain closed today to allow for counselling support to be offered to pupils and staff.

The coach company involved has issued a brief statement, expressing their concern and pledging full cooperation with the investigation: “Safety is always our top priority. We are deeply troubled by this accident and are working closely with authorities to determine what happened.”

More updates will follow as further details are released. Authorities have urged witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.
