Tsunami Warning Issued for Hawaii Following M8.7–8.8 Earthquake off Russia

Location of Quake: Off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, near Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky

Magnitude: Initially reported as M8.0, then upgraded to M8.7 and finally M8.8 by the US Geological Survey

Seismic Event and Tsunami Generation

The shallow magnitude‑8.8 megathrust earthquake struck about 125 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky, at a depth of roughly 11–19 km, in one of Earth’s most volatile seismic zones  .

Tsunami waves up to 4 metres have already hit parts of Russia’s far‑east coast, especially Severo‑Kurilsk, with evacuations underway.

Warnings and Official Actions in Hawaii

1:33 p.m. HST: Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii.

2:43 p.m. HST: Upgraded to a tsunami warning for the entire state; all coastal areas considered at risk regardless of shoreline orientation (tsunami waves can wrap around islands)

First tsunami waves were expected around 7:10–7:17 p.m. HST in areas such as Hanalei and Honolulu Harbor.

Emergency sirens were activated statewide; residents were urged to evacuate to higher ground or designated shelters. Roads saw heavy traffic as evacuations began.

Ports were closed, and the U.S. Coast Guard ordered harbor evacuations. Hilo International Airport suspended commercial flights to facilitate emergency movement.

What the Alerts Mean

Tsunami Watch: An earthquake may generate a tsunami; be prepared to act if upgraded.

Tsunami Warning: A tsunami with potential for widespread coastal flooding and dangerous currents is imminent; urgent action required.,

Residents were reminded that tsunami waves can arrive in multiple waves over several hours, and the first may not be the largest. Dangerous currents and flooding may persist even after initial wave arrival.

Broader Regional Impact

Tsunami alerts were also issued for Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, Northern California, and parts of the U.S. West Coast (advisories in Washington and Oregon)

International warnings extended to Japan, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, New Zealand, and Canada.

Japan alone evacuated nearly 900,000 residents and prepared for potential wave heights up to 3m.

Historical Context

Past large tsunamis serve as significant precedents:

The 1952 Severo-Kurilsk earthquake (M9.0) provoked massive tsunami waves that struck Hawaii, causing property damage and major harbour disruption.

Similarly, the 1923 Kamchatka earthquake caused tsunami waves that reached Hawaii and led to fatalities even without early warning systems.

These historical events demonstrate just how far-reaching and destructive seismic tsunamis from this region can be, underscoring the global vigilance today.

Summary

A massive M8.8 earthquake occurred off Kamchatka on July 29, 2025.

Tsunami warnings were issued for Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. West Coast; alerts extended across the Pacific.

Hawaii entered full alert, with statewide evacuations, port closures, and suspended flights.

The first waves struck early evening; residents were urged to stay clear of coastlines for hours afterward.

The event echoes catastrophic earthquakes of the past—prompting global action and ongoing monitoring.
