Lammy and Vance Meet, Rule Out Plans for Palestinian State

In a significant joint statement that is likely to reverberate across diplomatic circles, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US Vice President J.D. Vance declared that neither London nor Washington has plans to support the creation of a Palestinian state in the near future.

The remarks followed a closed-door meeting in Washington, where the two leaders discussed ongoing instability in the Middle East, the Israel-Gaza conflict, and wider regional security. Speaking at a joint press conference, Lammy emphasised that while the UK remains committed to humanitarian aid and promoting peace, recognition of Palestinian statehood is “not on the immediate agenda.”

Vance echoed the sentiment, saying the Biden administration stands firmly with Israel’s right to defend itself and believes that “statehood must be the outcome of direct negotiations between the parties, not an imposed solution.”

The statement marks a clear alignment between the US and UK on one of the most sensitive issues in Middle East diplomacy. Both leaders stressed the need for immediate ceasefire talks, the release of hostages, and rebuilding efforts in Gaza, but made clear that political recognition would require what Lammy called “fundamental changes on the ground, including guarantees for Israel’s long-term security.”

Critics, including human rights organisations and pro-Palestinian advocacy groups, condemned the decision, arguing that delaying statehood entrenches the cycle of conflict and undermines prospects for a lasting peace. Supporters of the stance, however, say the current instability and influence of militant factions make such recognition premature.

While the meeting produced no breakthrough on a peace framework, it reinforced the US-UK diplomatic partnership on regional security and their shared insistence that any resolution must come through negotiation rather than unilateral international recognition.
