World Leaders Condemn Israel’s Plan to Take Over Gaza City
In a move that has drawn swift and widespread international criticism, Israel’s reported plan to take full control of Gaza City has been condemned by leaders from across the globe. The announcement, which Israeli officials framed as a necessary step for national security and counterterrorism operations, has been met with alarm by diplomats and humanitarian organisations who warn it could escalate the already dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
According to sources close to the Israeli government, the proposed operation would involve a large-scale military presence in the city, the displacement of thousands of civilians, and a prolonged occupation to dismantle what it describes as militant infrastructure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has argued that the plan is aimed at ensuring “long-term stability and security” following months of escalating violence.
However, the move has drawn a chorus of objections from world leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron described the proposal as “a dangerous and disproportionate response that risks igniting a wider regional conflict,” calling for immediate diplomatic engagement. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz echoed these concerns, urging Israel to “respect international law and avoid collective punishment.”
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued one of the strongest rebukes, warning that the takeover could constitute a breach of the Geneva Conventions. “The civilian population of Gaza is already enduring extreme hardship—food shortages, lack of clean water, and destroyed infrastructure. Any further escalation will deepen the humanitarian catastrophe,” he said.
From Washington, the White House expressed “deep concern” over the reports, with a State Department spokesperson reiterating the United States’ position that a sustainable resolution must come through negotiation, not unilateral military action. Meanwhile, leaders from the Arab League condemned the plan as an attempt to permanently alter the demographic and political status of Gaza, warning of “grave consequences” for regional peace.
Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have also spoken out, highlighting the potential for mass civilian casualties. They stressed that any large-scale military occupation of a densely populated urban area would almost certainly lead to violations of international humanitarian law.
Diplomats are now racing to convene emergency talks at the UN Security Council in the hope of pressuring Israel to abandon or significantly alter its plans. Analysts say the backlash signals growing impatience among the international community with both the ongoing blockade of Gaza and the cycles of violence between Israel and Palestinian groups.
While Israel insists the move is about securing its borders and preventing future attacks, critics argue it risks inflaming tensions, destabilising the region, and closing the door on any prospects for a negotiated two-state solution.
