Ten Leading Organisations Unite in Open Letter to Home Secretary Over Immigration Policies

London, UK – Ten prominent organisations have come together to write an open letter to the Home Secretary, urging immediate action to address what they describe as “deeply concerning flaws” in the government’s immigration and asylum system.

The coalition, which includes major human rights groups, refugee charities, and legal aid organisations, expressed alarm over current policies that they claim “undermine the UK’s long-standing commitment to fairness, safety, and the rule of law.”

In the letter, the organisations highlight three major areas of concern:

The treatment of asylum seekers – citing delays in processing claims, overcrowded accommodation facilities, and inadequate healthcare provision.

Plans for offshore detention – which the groups warn could lead to “serious human rights violations” and leave vulnerable people at risk.

The need for safe routes – calling for more robust legal pathways for refugees fleeing conflict zones.

The letter states:

“Britain has historically stood as a beacon of refuge and justice. We urge the Home Secretary to honour this tradition by ensuring that asylum seekers are treated with dignity and compassion.”

The signatories include well-known names such as Amnesty International UK, Refugee Council, and Freedom From Torture, alongside smaller grassroots organisations working on the frontlines of migration support.

Government Response

A Home Office spokesperson said the government is “committed to a fair immigration system” and emphasised efforts to tackle illegal migration while maintaining support for those in genuine need.

However, critics argue that policies like the proposed offshoring and restrictions on legal aid for asylum claims risk breaching international obligations.

What Happens Next?

The organisations have requested an urgent meeting with the Home Secretary to discuss policy changes and have warned of potential legal challenges if their concerns are ignored.

This latest intervention comes amid mounting pressure on the government to overhaul its approach to immigration following a series of high-profile cases highlighting systemic failures.
