European Leaders Demand Ukraine’s Seat at Russia–US Negotiating Table
Several senior European leaders have issued a united call for Ukraine to be directly involved in any high-level negotiations between Russia and the United States, warning that decisions about the country’s future cannot be made without its presence.
The appeal comes amid reports that Washington and Moscow are preparing for a new round of talks aimed at easing tensions over the ongoing war in Ukraine and broader security concerns in Europe. EU leaders insist that Ukraine must be treated as a full participant in any diplomatic process, not merely the subject of discussion.
Speaking in Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “Nothing about Ukraine can be decided without Ukraine. Their sovereignty, security, and future cannot be traded in absentia.” She emphasised that Europe had learned from past conflicts that sidelining directly affected nations only fuels mistrust and undermines long-term peace.
French President Emmanuel Macron echoed this view, noting that the war’s outcome will define Europe’s security architecture for decades. “Ukraine is not a bargaining chip—it is a partner, a sovereign nation, and must be at the table,” Macron stated. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz added that Ukraine’s direct participation was also vital for maintaining international law and trust in democratic processes.
The demands come at a sensitive moment. Russia has indicated it is open to “serious talks” with the United States over security guarantees, while Washington is seeking ways to reduce the risk of escalation. However, Kyiv has expressed concern that bilateral US–Russia talks could sideline its interests, particularly on territorial integrity and post-war reconstruction.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly said his government will not accept any agreement negotiated over its head. “Our future cannot be decided in rooms where Ukraine is absent. We will not be observers in our own destiny,” he declared in a recent address.
Analysts warn that excluding Ukraine could fracture Western unity, embolden Russia, and set a dangerous precedent for international diplomacy. With the war now well into its third year, European capitals appear determined to ensure that Ukraine is not just on the agenda, but in the room.
