Train Sex Attacker Arrested After Shock Incident on Packed Evening Service

A man has been arrested after a woman was sexually assaulted on a busy commuter train, prompting renewed calls for greater passenger safety on public transport.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening aboard a service travelling between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton. According to British Transport Police (BTP), the victim, a woman in her 20s, was approached by the suspect shortly after the train departed. Witnesses say the man acted inappropriately and attempted to touch her without consent, despite repeated protests.

Other passengers intervened, confronting the man and alerting train staff, who ensured the carriage doors remained closed until officers could board at the next stop. The suspect, a man in his late 30s, was taken into custody and remains under investigation.

Detective Inspector Mark Walsh of BTP condemned the incident, stating:

“This was an appalling attack on a young woman during what should have been a safe journey home. We thank those passengers who stepped in to help — their quick actions ensured the suspect could not escape before police arrived.”

The assault has reignited debate over safety on the rail network, with campaigners calling for more plain-clothes officers to patrol evening services. A recent BTP report revealed that sexual offences on trains have risen by 17% over the past year, with the majority of victims being women travelling alone.

Rail operators have urged anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour to text the British Transport Police on 61016 or call 999 in an emergency.

Key Points:

Woman in her 20s assaulted on Birmingham to Wolverhampton train.

Passengers intervened and suspect arrested at next station.

BTP urges vigilance as sexual offences on trains continue to rise.

Conclusion:

The swift intervention of fellow travellers and the rapid police response prevented the suspect from fleeing, but the case highlights the ongoing threat faced by women on public transport. Authorities say they will continue to step up enforcement and encourage victims to come forward.
