Giorgio Armani, the King of Italian Fashion, Passes Away Aged 91

Milan, Italy – September 4, 2025 — Iconic fashion designer Giorgio Armani, founder of one of the world’s most prestigious luxury empires, has died at the age of 91. The Armani Group announced that he passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, eliciting a wave of tributes from around the world.

Born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, Armani initially pursued medicine before a job as a window dresser in Milan sparked his revolutionary journey into fashion.

A Legacy Carved in Elegance and Innovation

Over five decades, Armani redefined sophistication with his signature soft tailoring and understated elegance, pioneering looks that blurred lines between masculine and feminine dressing, especially notable in the 1980s power suits and relaxed silhouettes.

Known affectionately as “Il Signor Armani” and “King Giorgio,” he built an empire spanning apparel, beauty, home decor, hospitality, and more—all while remaining entirely independent of large luxury conglomerates.

Mourning and Tributes Across Italy and Beyond

In Milan, a red rose was laid outside the Armani headquarters as a quiet sign of mourning, while thousands of fans and citizens lined up outside to pay respects as a public viewing was arranged over the weekend before a private funeral on Monday.

Milan’s mayor declared Monday a day of civic mourning, affirming Armani’s indelible imprint on the city and fashion.

The Future of the Armani Empire

Succession plans appear in place, with longtime confidant Leo Dell’Orco, who led menswear and often stepped in during Armani’s illness, primed to take on a creative leadership role. Meanwhile, nieces Silvana and Roberta Armani are expected to oversee womenswear. The Giorgio Armani Foundation has been established to preserve the brand’s independence and prevent hostile takeovers in the years ahead.

A Cultural Revival

Since his passing, interest in vintage Armani pieces has surged: resale platforms report dramatic increases in searches and listings, particularly for styles from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Influencers and designers are celebrating his influence, noting his designs continue to define trends like “quiet luxury” and “corp-core,” and remain touchstones for elegance across generations.

Final Reflections

Giorgio Armani’s death marks the end of an extraordinary era in fashion—one shaped by innovation, humility, and independence. From Hollywood red carpets to everyday wardrobes, his timeless style redefined what it means to dress with confidence and grace.

His final collection, set to debut at this month’s Milan Fashion Week in celebration of 50 years of Giorgio Armani, stands as a poignant tribute to a man whose vision balanced refinement with relevance until the very end.
