Man Arrested After Spraying HIV-Positive Blood Into Hospital Employee’s Eyes

In a shocking and disturbing incident, a man has been arrested after allegedly removing his intravenous (IV) line and spraying HIV-positive blood into the eyes of a hospital employee. The attack took place inside a medical facility where the suspect was being treated, leaving staff members shaken and raising serious concerns about workplace safety in healthcare environments.

According to police reports, the incident occurred after the man became agitated while receiving treatment. Witnesses claim he ripped out his IV line before aggressively confronting staff. In the struggle, he is said to have deliberately squeezed or flicked blood from the line, striking one hospital worker directly in the face and eyes.

The victim, who has not been named for privacy reasons, was immediately taken to an emergency decontamination area and placed under post-exposure medical monitoring. Hospital officials have confirmed that the employee is receiving antiviral prophylactic treatment to reduce the risk of infection, and counselling has been offered to all affected staff.

Police officers were called to the scene shortly after the assault, and the suspect was taken into custody. He has since been charged with assault causing bodily harm and exposure to a biological hazard, offences that carry severe penalties under UK law.

A hospital spokesperson described the event as “a horrifying attack on one of our dedicated healthcare workers” and emphasized that violence against staff will not be tolerated. “Our employees come to work to help people, not to be assaulted or placed in danger,” the statement read.

Public health experts note that while the risk of HIV transmission through this type of exposure is relatively low, the psychological trauma for victims in such incidents can be immense. Dr. Eleanor Briggs, an infectious disease specialist, said, “Even when the risk of infection is medically small, the emotional impact of being targeted with blood in this way is enormous. It’s an act meant to cause fear.”

The suspect remains in custody pending a psychiatric evaluation. Authorities are reviewing hospital security footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the exact sequence of events.

This shocking case highlights ongoing concerns about safety within hospitals and the challenges healthcare workers face when dealing with volatile patients. Investigators have promised a full inquiry, while unions are once again calling for increased protections and legal consequences for those who attack medical staff.

The victim is said to be recovering at home and has asked for privacy during what hospital officials described as “an incredibly distressing time.”
