U.S. Disaster Response Team Arrives in Jamaica to Aid Recovery Efforts

Kingston, Jamaica

A United States Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) has arrived in Jamaica following the devastation caused by the recent passage of Hurricane Melissa, a record-breaking Category 5 storm that left widespread destruction across the island.

The team, deployed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), landed at Norman Manley International Airport early Friday morning. The group consists of search-and-rescue specialists, medical personnel, engineers, and logistics experts, all tasked with providing critical support to the Jamaican government’s ongoing emergency operations.

USAID Administrator Samantha Power said in a statement, “The United States stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Jamaica during this difficult time. Our disaster response team is working closely with local authorities to assess damage, deliver aid, and help communities recover as quickly as possible.”

The arrival of the U.S. team comes as Jamaica continues to struggle with extensive flooding, collapsed infrastructure, and widespread power outages affecting tens of thousands of residents. Reports indicate that several coastal communities remain inaccessible due to blocked roads and landslides.

The DART will coordinate with Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) to ensure that emergency supplies — including food, clean water, shelter materials, and medical equipment — are distributed efficiently to the hardest-hit regions.

U.S. military aircraft and Coast Guard vessels have also been placed on standby to deliver relief supplies and assist in evacuations from isolated areas.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed gratitude for the swift response from Washington, saying, “Jamaica deeply appreciates the support from our American partners. The solidarity shown in this moment of crisis underscores the strength of our longstanding friendship.”

As recovery efforts intensify, international assistance is expected to grow, with several other nations and regional organizations pledging additional aid in the coming days.

For now, U.S. and Jamaican teams are racing against time to restore basic services and prevent further humanitarian challenges in communities that remain cut off since the storm’s impact.

Hurricane Melissa, one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Caribbean, made landfall on the island’s southern coast earlier this week, bringing winds exceeding 170 mph and torrential rain that has displaced thousands.
