Mass Shooting at Bondi Beach During Hanukkah Celebration Shocks Sydney

Sydney, Australia — 14 December 2025

A mass shooting erupted at the world-famous Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday evening, sending shockwaves across the city and drawing a major emergency response from police and medical services.

Chaos at a Festive Gathering

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. local time during the first day of Chanukah — a Jewish festival of lights. Hundreds of families and beachgoers had gathered for a celebration known as “Chanukah by the Sea,” held near the Bondi Park Playground adjacent to the beach.

Witnesses reported hearing a barrage of gunshots that initially sounded like fireworks, prompting people to flee in panic. Some ran up the sand toward nearby streets and restaurants, while others sought cover in shops and cafes.

Gunmen and Police Response

Videos circulated on social media and seen by multiple news outlets appeared to show two individuals dressed in black firing weapons — reported by witnesses as shotguns — from a footbridge overlooking the beach area before the NSW Police arrived.

Police issued urgent alerts through social media, urging anyone at or near Bondi Beach to “take shelter” and for the public to avoid the area while the situation was labelled a “developing incident.”

Authorities have confirmed two people were taken into custody in connection with the shooting, though details about their involvement and motives remain under investigation.

Casualties and Emergency Efforts

Though official figures are still emerging, multiple sources report significant casualties:

At least six people were taken to local hospitals — including St Vincent’s, Royal Prince Alfred and St George — treated by NSW Ambulance at the scene.

Early reporting suggests multiple fatalities and many injuries, with some media citing up to a dozen deaths and dozens more wounded.

Emergency services responded with a large deployment of police units, ambulances, medical teams and helicopters. Officers were also seen performing CPR on the ground as bystanders helped victims in the immediate aftermath.

Community and Leadership Reactions

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing”, expressing solidarity with those affected and emphasizing that authorities were doing all they could to save lives.

NSW Premier Chris Minns urged calm and reiterated that the situation was still under active investigation, warning the public to heed police directions.

Leaders within the Jewish community have voiced deep concern given that the shooting intersected with a religious festival. Some organisations have tied the attack to broader anxieties around antisemitic violence, though official motive investigations continue.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have established exclusion zones around Bondi Beach and continue to collect evidence. Police lines and roadblocks remain in place while forensic and tactical units work the scene.

Police have not yet released official casualty figures or confirmed a definitive motive. They have appealed to anyone with information or footage to come forward to assist in the investigation.
