Legendary Call of Duty Developer Vince Zampella Dies in Tragic Car Crash

Los Angeles, CA — December 22, 2025 — The video game world has been rocked by the sudden death of Vince Zampella, a pioneering developer whose work helped shape the modern Call of Duty franchise, after he was killed in a car crash in Southern California.

Zampella, 55, best known as a co-founder of Infinity Ward and later as the head of Respawn Entertainment, died when the car he was driving veered off the Angeles Crest Highway in the San Gabriel Mountains, hit a concrete barrier, and caught fire. According to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle left the roadway on Sunday afternoon and both Zampella and a passenger were killed. Authorities have not yet released further details on what caused the crash.

A Titan of the Gaming Industry

Vince Zampella was a towering figure in the video game industry. In 2002, he co-founded Infinity Ward alongside Jason West, and together they created Call of Duty, a franchise that would go on to become one of the most successful and influential in gaming history. The series, known for its cinematic campaigns and competitive multiplayer, has sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide and influenced countless other shooters.

After departing Infinity Ward, Zampella helped launch Respawn Entertainment in 2010, where he continued to shape the industry with titles like Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and the acclaimed Star Wars Jedi series. Respawn was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2017, and Zampella took on greater leadership within EA, including overseeing parts of the Battlefield franchise.

Industry and Community Reactions

News of Zampella’s death has sparked an outpouring of shock and grief from developers, gamers, and industry figures around the world. Tributes have emphasised his creativity, leadership, and the enormous impact his work had on countless players and creators. Fans have taken to social media to share memories of the games and experiences that defined their love of interactive entertainment.

A Legacy Beyond Call of Duty

Zampella’s influence extended far beyond a single game. His role in shaping the first-person shooter genre and helping develop new franchises like Apex Legends — which redefined battle royale gameplay — ensured his legacy would endure across platforms and communities. Even as the industry continues to evolve, many of the systems and design philosophies he championed remain central to blockbuster games today.

Family and Future Statements

At the time of writing, there have been no official public comments from Zampella’s family or from Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts. Investigators are still looking into the circumstances of the crash. The gaming world mourns one of its most influential figures, whose work helped define an entire generation of video games.
