Trump’s Somalis speaking conference

At a cabinet meeting on 2 December 2025, President Trump launched a blistering tirade against Somali immigrants — particularly those in Minnesota — declaring that the United States should stop admitting them and calling them “garbage.”

He said that Somali immigrants “contribute nothing,” accused them of exploiting welfare and social services, and urged them to “go back to where they came from and fix it.”

He also took aim at Ilhan Omar, the Somali-American U.S. Congresswoman, calling her “garbage” along with her “friends,” and insisting that allowing more Somalis into the country would steer the U.S. in the “wrong way.”

Context: Fraud scandal and new enforcement targeting Minnesota’s Somali community

Trump’s remarks come against a backdrop of recent fraud investigations in the state of Minnesota. Prosecutors allege that some Somali Americans were involved in a multimillion-dollar welfare-fraud scheme tied to food-relief programs — a scandal which some in favor of tougher immigration enforcement have seized upon.

In response, the administration has reportedly mobilized federal agents to target undocumented Somalis and those with outstanding removal orders in the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis–St. Paul), home to one of the largest Somali populations in the United States.

Critics warn the operation risks sweeping up lawful residents, stoking fear across the Somali American community, and undermining trust in authorities.

Backlash and defense of the Somali community

Local officials in Minnesota — including city and state leaders — have strongly condemned the president’s remarks.

Supporters of the Somali community highlight that many Somalis in Minnesota are U.S. citizens or legal residents, who contribute positively through entrepreneurship, community building and hard work.

Responding directly, Ilhan Omar denounced Trump’s comments on social media, calling his “obsession” with her “creepy,” and rejected the sweeping generalisations as hate speech.

The broader implications: Immigration, racism, and social cohesion

Many analysts view Trump’s statements not only as an attack on a particular immigrant community but as a wider signal of an increasingly aggressive posture toward immigration from Africa and other non-Western regions.

Using dehumanising language like “garbage” raises serious ethical and legal concerns — especially if such rhetoric paves the way for policies that discriminate on the basis of nationality or ethnicity. Critics worry this could erode civil-rights protections and fuel xenophobia.

Finally, targeting an entire group for the alleged wrongdoing of some individuals undermines the principle of individual justice — and jeopardises social cohesion, especially in diverse societies where immigrant communities are a vital part of the fabric.

What’s next

Federal immigration enforcement efforts in Minnesota appear to be ramping up, potentially affecting many Somali-Americans — citizens and non-citizens alike.

Civil rights organisations and community leaders are likely to challenge any blanket deportation or rights-stripping measures.

The discourse around immigration policy and the treatment of immigrant communities could intensify ahead of key political debates and elections.
