Russia Launches Drone and Missile Attack on Kyiv
Russia has launched a large-scale drone and missile assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, intensifying pressure on the city as the war enters another critical phase. The overnight attack involved waves of explosive drones followed by cruise and ballistic missiles, triggering air-raid sirens across the capital and forcing residents into shelters.
Ukrainian air defence systems were activated throughout the night, with explosions heard across multiple districts as interceptors engaged incoming targets. Officials said many of the drones and missiles were successfully shot down, but falling debris caused damage to residential buildings, infrastructure, and vehicles. Emergency services were deployed to affected areas to extinguish fires and assist civilians.
Kyiv’s mayor reported damage in several neighbourhoods, including shattered windows, damaged power lines, and fires in apartment blocks. While injuries were reported, authorities said casualty figures were still being assessed. Energy facilities were also targeted, continuing a pattern of strikes aimed at weakening Ukraine’s power grid and disrupting daily life.
The attack forms part of Russia’s broader strategy of using long-range weapons to strike deep into Ukrainian territory. In recent months, Moscow has increasingly relied on Iranian-designed Shahed drones, launched in large numbers to overwhelm air defences before missiles follow. Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian areas in violation of international law.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, calling for increased air-defence support from Western allies. He reiterated that Ukraine needs more advanced systems to protect its cities and critical infrastructure from sustained aerial bombardment.
The assault on Kyiv comes amid continued fighting along the front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine, where Russian forces are attempting to make incremental gains. Analysts say the renewed focus on the capital is intended to pressure Ukrainian leadership and undermine civilian morale.
As the conflict continues, Kyiv residents remain braced for further attacks, with authorities urging people to heed air-raid warnings and remain vigilant. The strikes underline that, despite being far from the front lines, the Ukrainian capital remains a primary target in Russia’s ongoing campaign.
