British Teenager, 13, Stabbed to Death in Portugal in Domestic Violence Tragedy

Tomar, Portugal — A 13-year-old British boy has tragically died after being stabbed in a violent attack at a home in the village of Casais, in the municipality of Tomar, central Portugal. Local and UK authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and the events that led to this devastating loss.

The boy, identified locally as Alfie Hallett, was found by responding officers with fatal injuries caused by a bladed weapon. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alleged Attack and Explosion

Portuguese police say the suspected attacker — believed to be the former partner of Alfie’s mother — also suffered serious injuries and died at the location. Moments after officers arrived at the property, a suspected gas explosion tore through the house. The blast injured a member of Portugal’s National Republican Guard (GNR), though his injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

The boy’s mother, who had been at home during the attack, was found with signs of having been restrained and assaulted. She was taken to hospital for treatment and is receiving psychological support.

Background and Response

Investigators have indicated that the suspected assailant, a 43-year-old man, had a criminal history, including a prior conviction for aggravated homicide, and that authorities had previously been made aware of domestic violence issues within the household. Reports say domestic abuse complaints involving the family were recorded in both 2022 and 2023.

The explosion occurred just as emergency crews were responding to what was initially reported as a domestic violence situation. Police have cordoned off the scene as forensic investigators continue to examine the property.

Community and Official Reactions

Local sports clubs and community members have expressed profound grief at the loss of the young boy. Alfie was known as a promising basketball player, and his club, Sport Club Operário de Cem Soldos in Tomar, paid tribute to him on social media, describing him as someone who will “always be in our hearts” and recalling his enthusiasm for the game.

The British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed it is in contact with Portuguese authorities and stands ready to provide consular support to the family as needed.

A Community in Mourning

News of Alfie’s death has sent waves of shock through communities both in Portugal and the UK. Neighbours reported that there had been frequent arguments at the family home prior to the tragedy, underscoring concerns about ongoing domestic tensions.

Authorities have not yet released full details of the ongoing investigation, and are continuing to piece together the motive and exact sequence of events that led to this heartbreaking loss.

Condolences go out to the family of this young lad.
