UK Geography Teacher Found Guilty of Sexual Abuse of Pupils

A former geography teacher has been convicted at Plymouth Crown Court on multiple counts of sexual abuse and indecency involving female pupils, in a case that has shocked the local community and highlighted ongoing concerns around safeguarding in schools.

Anthony Redmond, 54, was found guilty on eight counts of sexual abuse relating to his conduct with two female students while teaching at a school in Plymouth during the 2000s. The offences occurred in several locations, including school premises, a hotel, and his own home. On one occasion, the court heard that an abuse incident took place in a school cupboard — intensifying the distressing nature of the case.

Details of the Case

The prosecution successfully proved that Redmond engaged in sexual activities with both pupils, including taking the virginity of each girl, despite his repeated denials of guilt. Several of the charges included abuse of a position of trust, a serious offence under UK law designed to protect children from exploitation by adults in authority.

One of the victims gave a powerful impact statement to the court, saying she had been left feeling “used and worthless” as a result of Redmond’s actions.

Legal Process and Next Steps

Redmond maintained his innocence throughout the trial, but a jury convicted him following a full hearing. He has since been granted bail ahead of his sentencing scheduled for 10 February. A pre-sentence report has been ordered at his lawyer’s request — a standard procedure where the judge seeks background information to help determine the appropriate sentence.

Broader Context

Cases of teachers abusing their position of trust are taken extremely seriously in the UK. When convicted, individuals face potential imprisonment, placement on the sex offenders register, and prohibition from working with children. They also contribute to broader efforts to strengthen safeguarding measures across schools and educational settings to protect young people from predatory behaviour. Redmond’s conviction adds to a growing number of high-profile cases in recent years involving educators found guilty of sexual misconduct or grooming relating to pupils.
