Afghan Migrant Who Attacked Woman in London Dies in Prison
An Afghan national serving time in a London prison has died in custody, prompting an investigation by prison watchdogs into the circumstances of his death.
Death Behind Bars
Gulwali Stanekzay, 25, was found dead in his cell at HMP Wandsworth, a Category B men’s prison in south-west London, on 17 January 2026, while serving a three-year sentence for a brutal and unprovoked assault on a woman in north-west London. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has begun probing the incident to establish how and why he died.
The Crime: Random Assault in Harlesden
The offence occurred on the evening of 26 February 2023, when Stanekzay approached 23-year-old Aisha Waris as she walked home along Minet Avenue in Harlesden, north-west London. CCTV footage showed him deliberately cycling into her, then repeatedly punching her about the head and shoulders for about a minute. The victim was left covered in blood and requiring hospital treatment for her injuries.
In the ensuing chaos, the assailant returned to the scene and continued the assault, reportedly striking the victim again at a neighbour’s property before turning his aggression on nearby property, causing significant damage.
Stanekzay pleaded guilty in May 2023 to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of criminal damage. At sentencing, the judge described the attack as “wholly unprovoked” and emphasised the frightening nature of the footage capturing the assault.
Background and Context
Stanekzay arrived in the UK from Afghanistan as an unaccompanied minor in 2016 and was reported to have experienced periods of homelessness prior to the offence. At the time of the attack, he had spent time in immigration centres and had been detained under immigration powers on several occasions.
HMP Wandsworth, where he died, is one of the largest prisons in the UK, holding adult male prisoners, and has previously been the subject of operational scrutiny.
Prison Death Investigations
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is independently examining the circumstances surrounding Stanekzay’s death. The PPO’s investigations typically aim to determine whether there were any issues in care, health support, safety procedures, or security that contributed to a death in custody. Full findings will only be available once the inquiry concludes and is published.
Reactions and Wider Debate
Incidents involving migrants and asylum seekers committing violent crimes often feature in public and political debate about immigration policy and community safety. Experts caution against drawing broad conclusions from individual cases, emphasising that crime statistics are complex and influenced by many factors beyond nationality or immigration status.
