French Police Raid X Offices in Paris Amid Expanded Criminal Probe

Paris authorities carried out a high-profile raid on the French offices of Elon Musk’s social media company X on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, as part of an expanding criminal investigation. Prosecutors with the Paris cybercrime unit and national police, backed by Europol, conducted the search amid allegations that the platform may have facilitated the spread of harmful and illegal content.

The development has drawn intense global attention given X’s prominence and Musk’s visibility as its owner. French prosecutors have also summoned Musk and other current and former executives for voluntary interviews in Paris in April, escalating legal pressure on the company.

What Authorities Are Investigating

The investigation initially began in January 2025 with concerns about biased algorithms and data practices. Over time, prosecutors have widened the scope to include multiple serious issues:

Allegations Under Scrutiny

Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM): Authorities are examining whether X was complicit in the possession, distribution or availability of pornographic material involving minors.

AI-Generated Deepfakes: Allegations include creation or distribution of sexually explicit deepfakes (manipulated images or videos) through the platform.

Holocaust Denial Content: Investigators are also looking at cases where X’s systems or its AI chatbot, Grok, allegedly circulated language that could amount to Holocaust denial — a criminal offence under French law.

Algorithm and Data Abuse: The probe still covers the original claims of manipulated or fraudulent extraction and processing of data from X’s systems.

These expanded allegations reflect growing concerns about how large platforms moderate content, particularly when AI technologies are involved.

Why This Matters

The case is significant for several reasons:

Legal and Regulatory Risk for X

The inquiry involves potential criminal offences, not just regulatory fines or compliance reviews, meaning legal liability for executives and the company could be serious if wrongdoing is found.

 AI and Content Moderation Scrutiny

The probe marks one of the first major legal actions tied to content generated or facilitated by AI tools like Grok, especially where deepfakes and non-consensual imagery are involved. This may set precedents for how AI-driven platforms are regulated across the EU.

Wider European and UK Interest

French action comes amid broader scrutiny: regulators in the UK (including the Information Commissioner’s Office and Ofcom) have launched investigations into how X and Musk’s AI companies handle user data and harmful content.

Response from Musk and X

X has strongly denied the allegations, portraying the investigation as politically motivated and unjustified. In communications on the platform, X’s Global Government Affairs team argued the raid was an attempt at “law enforcement theatre”, rather than lawful enforcement.

What Happens Next

French authorities have invited Musk, Linda Yaccarino (former X CEO), and other executives for voluntary interviews scheduled in April 2026. Investigators will likely continue gathering evidence and could escalate the case depending on what they find.

Because the matter touches on criminal statutes, explicit content laws, and emerging AI regulation, the outcome could reverberate far beyond France — affecting international tech policy, content moderation standards, and legal responsibilities for social media platforms worldwide.
