University Student Fatally Stabbed Near De Montfort University Campus

A university student has died after being stabbed near the De Montfort University (DMU) campus in Leicester, prompting a full murder investigation and leaving the campus community in shock.

Tragic Incident in City Centre

Police were called just after 5 pm on Tuesday 3 February following reports that a man had collapsed on Oxford Street, close to the junction with Bonners Lane — an area adjacent to the DMU campus in Leicester city centre. Emergency services, including paramedics and ambulance crews, attended the scene shortly afterwards.

Officers were told the man, who was in his 20s and later confirmed to be a student at De Montfort University, had been stabbed during an apparent confrontation with another man in the street. The suspect left the scene before police arrived.

The victim was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary but died a short time later despite efforts to save his life.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Leicestershire Police have launched a murder investigation. An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody while detectives work to establish what happened.

Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, senior investigating officer, said officers are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses to piece together the circumstances of the stabbing. She urged anyone who saw the incident or has dash-cam footage to contact police.

University Response

De Montfort University described the incident as a “major incident around our campus” and said it was working closely with police. Vice-Chancellor Professor Katie Normington said the university community is “devastated to confirm the tragic death of one of our students.”

The university has offered direct support to students, staff and the victim’s family and thanked the wider Leicester community for messages of support during this “very difficult time.”

Impact on Campus and City

The stabbing occurred at a busy time of day, with people travelling home and students finishing classes. The incident has led to roads around the city centre being closed temporarily, including Oxford Street and surrounding routes, as police continue their forensic work and investigation.

Local residents and students — particularly those living or studying near the campus — have expressed shock and concern following the violence, highlighting broader anxieties over knife crime and safety in urban areas.

Appeal for Information

Police have emphasised that speculation is unhelpful as the investigation continues and have reiterated their appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to contact Leicestershire Police quoting incident number 495 of 3 February.
