British Rapper Ghetts Jailed for 12 Years After Fatal Hit-and-Run Collision

British grime artist Ghetts has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for causing the death of a young student in a hit-and-run incident in north-east London. The sentence was handed down today at the Old Bailey by Judge Mark Lucraft KC, who also disqualified him from driving for 17 years.

Tragic Crash in Ilford

Ghetts, 41, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, admitted in December to causing death by dangerous driving and an additional dangerous driving charge arising from a series of reckless actions on the night of the crash.

On 18 October 2025, Clarke-Samuel was driving his BMW in Ilford, north-east London, while over the legal drink-drive limit and at excessive speeds — reportedly up to 67–70 mph in a 30 mph zone. Prosecutors said he ran multiple red lights, drove onto the wrong side of the road, and collided with other vehicles before striking 20-year-old Nepalese student Yubin Tamang as he crossed Redbridge Lane East.

Tamang, who had travelled to the UK to pursue his education, suffered catastrophic injuries and died in hospital two days later. The defendant did not stop at the scene and did not call emergency services, instead driving approximately eight miles back toward his home before police arrested him the following day.

Court Proceedings and Remorse

CCTV footage shown in court captured Clarke-Samuel’s erratic driving in the lead-up to the collision. Judge Lucraft described the series of events as “simply shocking” and noted the “appalling litany of incidents” before the fatal crash.

In court, Clarke-Samuel expressed deep regret in a letter read by his defence, saying he felt “extreme regret, shame and remorse” and apologised to Tamang’s family, acknowledging the irreversible harm caused.

The rapper’s defence had pointed to past trauma, including being robbed at gunpoint in previous years, as contributing to his state of mind — though prosecutors said there was no evidence he was pursued on the night of the incident.

Impact and Legacy

Ghetts is not only a well-known figure in UK music but also an actor, having appeared in the Netflix series Supacell. His career includes multiple award nominations, including a Mercury Prize nod, and collaborations with major artists such as Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Skepta.

However, the gravity of the fatal crash and the loss of a promising young life has cast a long shadow over his achievements, with the court’s lengthy sentence reflecting the seriousness of the offence.
