Vybz Kartel Receives Proclamation and Key to Broward County

Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel has received one of the highest civic honours in South Florida after being presented with an official proclamation and the Key to Broward County during a ceremony in Florida.

The honour was presented during a special commission meeting at Lauderhill City Hall in Broward County, recognising the Jamaican artist’s global cultural influence and humanitarian efforts. The presentation was led by Lauderhill Mayor Denise Grant, who praised Kartel’s impact on music and community support initiatives.

Recognition for Global Influence

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, has long been regarded as one of the most influential figures in dancehall music. City officials said the recognition was intended to celebrate not only his contribution to music but also his role in supporting humanitarian efforts in Jamaica.

According to officials, the award highlighted the artist’s outreach following a devastating hurricane in Jamaica, where musicians and public figures mobilised support and relief for affected communities.

Receiving the honour, Kartel expressed gratitude for the recognition, calling the moment both “humbling” and meaningful.

Other Jamaican Icons Honoured

Kartel was not the only artist honoured at the ceremony. Several legendary reggae and dancehall figures were also recognised for their cultural and humanitarian contributions, including:

Beenie Man

Busy Signal

Spragga Benz

Wayne Wonder

All five artists received proclamations and symbolic keys in recognition of their influence on Caribbean culture and their role in strengthening ties between Jamaica and the large Caribbean diaspora community in South Florida.

Celebrating Caribbean Culture

The ceremony formed part of celebrations connected to International Reggae Month, with city leaders highlighting the powerful global reach of Jamaican music. Officials noted that reggae and dancehall have played a major role in shaping cultural identity within Caribbean communities in the United States.

Mayor Grant said the honour recognises artists who have used their platform not only to entertain but also to uplift communities during times of hardship.

A Major Moment for Dancehall

For Kartel, often referred to as the “Worl’ Boss,” the recognition marks another milestone in a career that has influenced generations of artists and fans around the world.

With millions of listeners globally and a lasting impact on modern dancehall, the Broward County honour further cements his place as one of Jamaica’s most recognised and influential musical figures.
