Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger dies in tragic crash

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 following a devastating road accident in Austria.

The Austrian international was involved in a fatal collision on Thursday morning (April 16, 2026), when his car was struck by a train at a level crossing near Salzburg. Emergency services rushed to the scene and attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and no one on the train was injured.

A respected figure in football

Manninger is best remembered for his time at Arsenal, where he played between 1997 and 2002. Signed from Grazer AK, he became the club’s first Austrian player and quickly made an impact.

During the 1997/98 season, he stepped in for injured first-choice goalkeeper David Seaman and delivered a series of standout performances. His form helped Arsenal secure the Premier League and FA Cup double, earning him a winners’ medal and widespread praise.

Across his career, Manninger played for several major European clubs, including Juventus and Liverpool, and earned 33 caps for Austria.

Tributes pour in

Following news of his death, tributes flooded in from across the football world. Former clubs, teammates, and organisations described him as a consummate professional and a respected figure both on and off the pitch.

Arsenal released a statement expressing shock and sadness, while clubs such as Juventus and his former side Red Bull Salzburg also paid tribute, remembering his humility, dedication, and character.

Life beyond football

After retiring in 2017, Manninger stepped away from the spotlight and returned to a quieter life in Austria. He focused on carpentry and property renovation—skills he had developed before his football career.

Conclusion

Alex Manninger’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the football community. Remembered for his calm presence in goal and his professionalism throughout a long career, he leaves behind a legacy that spans some of Europe’s biggest clubs and one of Arsenal’s most iconic seasons.

His passing is a stark reminder of how quickly life can change, with the football world united in mourning a player widely respected both as an athlete and as a person.
