Nigel Farage Faces Questions Over Undeclared £5 Million Donation

Nigel Farage is facing a parliamentary investigation after claims emerged that he failed to declare a £5 million donation linked to cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne. The controversy has triggered growing political pressure on the Reform UK leader and raised fresh questions about transparency in Westminster politics.

According to reports, the £5 million payment was allegedly given to Farage before he entered Parliament as MP for Clacton during the 2024 general election campaign. Farage insists the money was a “personal gift” intended to fund private security arrangements and argues that parliamentary rules did not require him to declare it.

However, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards has now opened an official inquiry into whether the donation should have been registered under Commons rules. MPs are required to declare relevant financial interests received within the twelve months before entering Parliament. Critics argue the large sum should have been disclosed regardless of when it was handed over.

The investigation centres on businessman Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based crypto investor who has become one of Reform UK’s largest financial backers. Harborne has donated millions of pounds to Reform UK and other Brexit-linked political movements over recent years.

Opposition politicians from both Labour and Conservative parties have demanded greater transparency over the payment, with some accusing Farage of attempting to avoid scrutiny during a period when Reform UK has surged in national opinion polls.

Farage has denied wrongdoing and says lawyers reviewed the arrangement before the money was accepted. A spokesman for Reform UK said no rules were broken and described the investigation as politically motivated.

If parliamentary investigators conclude that the rules were breached, Farage could face sanctions ranging from a formal apology to suspension from the House of Commons. A suspension longer than ten sitting days could potentially trigger a recall petition in his Clacton constituency, leading to a possible by-election.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time for Reform UK, as the party continues gaining support across parts of Britain while facing increasing scrutiny over its funding and political operations.
