Giant Hailstones Smash Down in Violent Storms

Residents were left stunned as huge hailstones – some the size of softballs – crashed from the sky during a wave of violent storms in the United States this week.

The most dramatic event occurred in southwest Texas, particularly around Camp Wood and Uvalde County, where a powerful supercell thunderstorm unleashed hailstones measuring up to 5 inches (12 cm) in diameter—larger than a softball.

Locals described the moment as “terrifying,” with ice chunks smashing car windscreens, damaging roofs, and forcing people to run for cover. Meteorologists confirmed that hail of this size can only form inside extremely intense storms, where updrafts exceeding 80–100 mph keep ice suspended long enough to grow to massive sizes.

Even Bigger Hail Discovered

In a separate but related weather development, an even more extraordinary find was reported in the Texas Panhandle, where a record-breaking hailstone measuring 7.1 inches across was discovered after the storm passed.

The giant lump of ice was so large it was initially mistaken for a household object. Experts say hailstones of this scale are extremely rare and represent the upper limits of what storms can produce.

Widespread Severe Weather

The hailstorms were part of a broader outbreak of extreme weather across the central United States. In Springfield, Missouri, another storm dropped hailstones up to 12 cm (5 inches) wide, causing widespread destruction to vehicles and property.

Across the region, tornadoes, damaging winds, and flash flooding accompanied the hail, creating a dangerous combination of weather hazards.

Why Were the Hailstones So Big?

Hail forms when raindrops are carried high into freezing parts of storm clouds, where they turn to ice and grow layer by layer. The stronger the storm’s updraft, the larger the hailstones can become.

In these recent storms, conditions were ideal for “giant hail,” with powerful rotating thunderstorms—known as supercells—providing the energy needed to produce unusually large ice stones.

A Growing Concern

Scientists warn that such extreme hail events may become more noticeable. Research suggests that while overall hail frequency may vary, the size of hailstones in the most intense storms could increase, raising the risk of damage to homes, cars, and crops.

Summary

* Main location: Southwest Texas (Camp Wood, Uvalde County, and surrounding areas)

* Hail size: Up to 5 inches (softball-sized)

* Record find: 7.1-inch hailstone in the Texas Panhandle

* Other affected areas: Missouri and parts of the central United States
