Pressure is mounting on Keir Starmer after reports emerged that around 66 Labour MPs have now either publicly called for him to resign or demanded a timetable for his departure following disastrous local election results across England, Scotland and Wales. The growing rebellion has become one of the biggest internal crises facing the Labour Party since it returned to government in 2024.

The backlash follows heavy losses in the 2026 local elections, where Labour reportedly lost hundreds of council seats while Nigel Farage and Reform UK made major gains across traditional Labour strongholds. Critics inside the party fear that Starmer’s leadership is becoming increasingly unpopular with voters and could damage Labour’s chances at the next general election.

Several MPs and junior government aides have resigned from their positions in protest, with some openly demanding a leadership contest. Former minister Catherine West has become one of the leading voices calling for change, arguing that Labour needs a “fresh direction” before public support collapses further. Reports suggest some MPs are backing alternative figures such as Andy Burnham or Wes Streeting as possible replacements.

Despite the growing revolt, Starmer has refused to step down. In a speech aimed at calming Labour MPs, he insisted he would not “walk away” and warned that forcing another leadership battle could throw the country into political chaos. He also promised new policies focused on rebuilding public trust, improving economic growth and strengthening ties with Europe.

However, many critics inside Labour believe the speech failed to stop the rebellion. Some MPs argue that voters have lost confidence in the Prime Minister due to policy U-turns, economic pressures and growing dissatisfaction with the government’s direction. Polling figures reported in recent months have also shown Starmer suffering historically low approval ratings.

The crisis now raises serious questions about whether Labour can remain united under Starmer’s leadership. With dozens of MPs openly challenging his authority and rumours of leadership manoeuvres continuing behind closed doors, Westminster is bracing for what could become a full-scale Labour leadership battle in the months ahead.
