A former senior CIA official has been accused of stealing more than $40 million worth of gold bars from the US government after federal agents discovered a massive stash hidden inside his Virginia home.
According to court documents, David Rush was arrested after an FBI raid uncovered approximately 303 gold bars weighing around one kilogram each, alongside nearly $2 million in cash and dozens of luxury watches. Investigators allege the treasure was secretly stored at his property after going missing from government custody.
Federal prosecutors claim Rush requested large amounts of foreign currency and gold bars between late 2025 and early 2026, allegedly stating the assets were needed for “work-related expenses.” However, an internal CIA audit reportedly raised alarm when the gold and cash could no longer be fully accounted for.
The FBI says agents searched Rush’s home on May 18, where they seized the enormous cache of gold, cash and luxury Rolex watches. Authorities estimate the value of the recovered gold alone exceeds $40 million due to soaring global gold prices.
Rush now faces charges relating to theft of public money and embezzlement of government assets. Investigators also allege he falsified parts of his military and academic background, including claims that he served as a Navy pilot and held degrees from prestigious universities. Court filings reportedly state that several of those credentials could not be verified.
The case has sparked serious questions over how a senior intelligence official with top-secret clearance was allegedly able to gain access to such vast amounts of government-owned assets without immediate detection. The CIA, FBI and US Department of Justice are continuing their joint investigation into the scandal.
Rush remains in federal custody awaiting further court hearings in Virginia. If convicted, he could face years in prison under federal theft and fraud laws.
