Sadiq Khan Under Fire During Heated Grooming Gangs Confrontation
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has come under renewed scrutiny following a heated confrontation over grooming gangs in the capital, as a major national inquiry prepares to investigate allegations of child sexual exploitation and institutional failings.
The controversy centres on previous comments made by Khan in which he stated there was “no indication” that grooming gangs similar to those exposed in towns such as Rotherham and Telford were operating in London. Critics, including victims’ groups, opposition politicians and campaigners, have argued that those remarks underestimated the scale of the problem and failed to address concerns raised by survivors.
Tensions escalated during recent public exchanges at City Hall and in media interviews, where Khan was challenged over his handling of the issue and questioned about whether authorities had done enough to investigate allegations of organised child sexual exploitation in the capital. Reports indicate that several journalists and political opponents pressed the Mayor on claims that warnings about grooming gangs had not received sufficient attention.
The row comes as the Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs announced that London will be among the first areas examined, alongside Oldham, Bradford and Keighley. The inquiry will investigate how police, local authorities, health services and other public bodies responded to cases of group-based child sexual exploitation and whether opportunities to protect vulnerable children were missed.
Responding to the inquiry’s decision, Khan said it was important that “no stone is left unturned” and welcomed an independent examination of the issue. He stated that victims and survivors must remain at the centre of the investigation and argued that external scrutiny was necessary to ensure public confidence.
The inquiry, chaired by Baroness Anne Longfield, has been granted statutory powers to compel witnesses and organisations to provide evidence. Investigators will examine how children were identified and protected, how victims were treated, and whether institutional failures contributed to abuse continuing unchecked.
The grooming gangs issue has remained a highly sensitive political topic across the UK, with campaigners calling for greater accountability and transparency from public authorities. Survivors have long argued that lessons from previous scandals must be fully learned to prevent future exploitation.
As the inquiry begins its work, attention is likely to remain focused on London and the role played by local and national institutions in responding to allegations of child sexual exploitation. The findings could have significant implications for safeguarding policies, policing practices and political accountability across the country.
