Record Thunderstorm Batters UK as More Than 29,000 Lightning Strikes Recorded

The United Kingdom experienced one of its most dramatic thunderstorm events in recent years as more than 29,000 lightning strikes were recorded across England within a 24-hour period, according to weather officials. The intense storm system swept across southern and western parts of the country overnight, bringing torrential rain, thunder, flash flooding and widespread disruption.

The Met Office reported that 29,074 lightning strikes were detected in the 24 hours leading up to 9am on Tuesday. Somerset was the worst-affected area, accounting for 18,540 of those strikes as powerful thunderstorms moved across the region.

Residents across England reported being woken by repeated flashes of lightning and loud thunder during the night. Heavy rainfall led to flash flooding in several locations, while emergency services responded to numerous incidents linked to the severe weather. London Fire Brigade received hundreds of calls as floodwater affected roads, homes and transport services.

The storms also caused disruption to transport networks. Flooding affected parts of London’s rail system, while Bristol Airport temporarily suspended operations as thunderstorms passed through the area. Power outages were reported in several communities, particularly in parts of Somerset and the South West.

Weather experts said the thunderstorms developed after a period of intense heat and humidity created unstable atmospheric conditions. The storm activity came as Britain entered a major heatwave, with forecasters warning that temperatures could climb to near-record levels later in the week.

The Met Office has urged the public to remain alert for further weather warnings as extreme heat continues to affect much of the country. Meteorologists say the combination of high temperatures and humid air can create ideal conditions for powerful thunderstorms, increasing the risk of flooding, transport disruption and damage from lightning strikes.

While the storms brought dramatic scenes across England, weather officials continue to monitor conditions closely as the UK faces one of its most significant periods of extreme weather in recent years.
