Former Arsenal and Austria goalkeeper Alex Manninger has tragically died at the age of 48 after the car he was driving was struck by a train at a railway crossing near Salzburg, Austria. The accident occurred on the morning of April 16, with emergency services rushing to the scene following reports of a collision between a passenger train and a vehicle. Authorities confirmed that Manninger was alone in the car at the time of the crash.  

Initial investigations by Austrian police indicate that the vehicle was hit while crossing the railway line and was dragged along the tracks by the train. Despite the efforts of first responders, Manninger could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. The train driver and passengers were not reported to have suffered serious injuries.  

Manninger enjoyed a distinguished football career spanning more than two decades. After joining Arsenal in 1997, he became the first Austrian player to represent the club in the Premier League. During his time in North London, he helped Arsenal secure the Premier League and FA Cup double in the 1997-98 season. He later played for several major European clubs, including Juventus, Liverpool FC, Fiorentina and Red Bull Salzburg. He also earned 33 international caps for Austria and represented his country at UEFA Euro 2008.  

Tributes have poured in from across the football world. Former clubs, teammates and football associations described Manninger as a respected professional, known for his calm personality, dedication and leadership on and off the pitch. The Austrian Football Association praised him as an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football whose influence inspired a generation of young goalkeepers.  

The news has shocked supporters across Europe, with many remembering Manninger not only for his achievements in football but also for the professionalism and humility he displayed throughout his career. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
