NATO Warns Europe to Prepare for Potential Russian Threat Within Five Years
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned that member nations must strengthen their defences amid concerns that Russia could be in a position to threaten NATO territory within the next five years.
Speaking at an event hosted by Chatham House in London, Rutte said that NATO allies should not underestimate the pace at which Russia is rebuilding its military capabilities. He argued that the alliance must increase defence spending, modernise armed forces and expand military production to maintain a strong deterrent against potential aggression.
Rutte stated that Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years, warning that the alliance must be prepared for future security challenges. He stressed that the goal of increased military readiness is to prevent conflict rather than encourage it.
NATO leaders have called for significant increases in defence investment, with discussions focusing on strengthening air and missile defences, replenishing ammunition stockpiles and improving the alliance’s ability to respond rapidly to emerging threats.
The warning comes as the war in Ukraine continues to shape European security policy. NATO officials argue that Russia’s military activities and defence production demonstrate the need for long-term planning and preparedness across the alliance.
At the same time, NATO leaders have emphasised that the alliance remains a defensive organisation. Officials have repeatedly stated that they do not expect an imminent attack on NATO territory, but believe preparations made now are necessary to maintain peace and deter future aggression.
Russia has rejected NATO’s warnings and denied that it intends to attack alliance members. The Kremlin has accused NATO of using such claims to justify higher military spending and a larger military presence in Europe.
The debate over defence spending and military preparedness is expected to remain a major issue for NATO governments as they assess the future security landscape in Europe and the continuing impact of the conflict in Ukraine.
