Donald Trump Suffers Supreme Court Defeat Over Birthright Citizenship

However, lower federal courts had blocked the executive order from taking effect, finding it inconsistent with the Constitution. The Supreme Court’s decision leaves those injunctions in place and confirms that the order cannot be enforced.

The ruling was welcomed by civil rights organizations, immigration advocates and constitutional scholars, who argued that birthright citizenship is a fundamental constitutional protection that cannot be altered through executive action. Supporters of the decision said it preserves a principle that has been central to American law for more than a century.
